#lifeinshanghai is composed of long, exhausting days & busy weekends. My work-life balance has been severally compromised since moving here &, even before now, adjusting to this new life has been hard. I‘m struggling to see the positives now that my family & I are #stuckinshanghai but trying to focus on books, challenges & journaling, hobbies that help me grow but which have been too long neglected. #soberinshanghai #currentlyreading #readinggoals

DocBrown What brings you there? When did you arrive? How long are you going to stay? 5y
TrishB They work very long hours in China, culturally I can see work/life balance would be hard. 5y

“... alcohol is the only drug you have to explain not using.” (70)

Funnily enough, since moving to Shanghai I‘d been drinking less but I also feel I‘m in overlapping cultures (China, foreigners) that have socialization foundations grounded even MORE in drinking. And that‘s obviously only heightened since #startingsober

#lifeinshanghai #seriouslysober

megnews Wow! Never thought of it in that way but so true. I have 2 grandfathers, 2 great aunts, a great grandfather and his 7 brothers and their dad who were all alcoholics. I rarely to never drink and always find myself having to explain. I think I‘ll use this line next time. 5y

As I look to be more honest about my ‘not-a-problem-but-its-caused-problems‘ relationship with drinking I came across this book and author. McKowen‘s openness is encouraging & enlightening as I struggle to accept my worth despite my shame. I‘m really glad there are books and voices and woman who have the courage to be so vulnerable in sharing their stories. May I too, be counted among them, no matter how minor. 🙂

Cosmos_Moon_River Have you listened to Home Podcast? That‘s how I came across this book. It is Laura McKowen & Holly Whitaker. I started listening to it last year when my sister entered rehab for opioids & I was looking for outlets to help me understand addiction. I started listening to it everyday on my way home from work & started to question my drinking. Just listening to it, I naturally slowed down & stopped for a while. There are no new episodes but it‘s good. 5y
dixi_e I haven‘t but I will hunt it down now! Thanks for the recommendation. In less than a week I‘ll be one year sober. ☺️😄 4y

Really enjoyed this book and the insight into one aspect of the self. It‘s helping me better understand my own identity in all its roles and my actions and responses in those roles. It‘s also helping me realize how I can better interact with others whom I sometimes struggle to communicate well with....

Definitely highly recommend it.

Finally reading this popular book and reading it with one of my favourite kids. 🥰 The short chapters are exactly what he needs to be motivated to move from more graphic novels / short text to more sustained reading. #proudmama #familyofreaders #booksbindus

Lauren_reading The second book is just as good as the first so far! 5y
dixi_e @Tamra I‘m looking forward to sharing it with him. Think its also the right time for him to be considering some of the larger ideas it shares. 5y
dixi_e @LaurenReads Good to know. He already discovered the sequel as he was checking out the number of chapters. He‘d barely stared this one but was very excited at the prospect of there being a continuation. 😆😄 5y

There is such brutal honesty in this book and I love it. This has me thinking of all the “why didn‘t she just leave him?” questions/attacks and the damaging reality of how hard it is for woman to do so.

LiteraryinPA About the typos in “you‘re” and “financal”? I assume it‘s intentional... right? 6y

dixi_e I know but... the character‘s failure to comment on it is irking me and still makes me wonder. I feel that anyone literate enough would, at some point, at least shake their head at the ridiculousness. 6y

jillrhudy Wow. As a librarian I‘m fascinated by the sticker/circulation concept. 6y
dixi_e @jillrhudy How so?? The timeline? The fine? The audacity to limit reading times? (🙃😆) 6y
jillrhudy All of it but especially the fine! 6y
dixi_e @jillrhudy Well, this fine is only for Express Reads and Express Reads are those books deemed popular and hard to keep on the shelf. And if it happened that someone couldn‘t pay, my experience with the library is it would be waved. How does your library manage popular reads? 6y

This is collection of interconnected stories, revolving around families in a newly built suburban neighbourhood. This is one of those books that I find hard to review; the stories are entertaining enough to keep me reading yet they‘re also somewhat blasé. I enjoyed the book but wouldn‘t go out of my way to pick it up now that I‘ve experienced it.

It‘s the ‘thinking aloud‘ of all the thoughts so many (all?) woman have over the course of their existence that is 🤯 as I read this book. And more personally, it‘s me connecting with this quote and book as a single parent whose path to parenthood was externally motivated. Regret is pointless and changing the past is impossible so how do I reconcile the life I want to live with the life I have (which is a ? deeper than just mothering)?
