People with more knowledge of Egyptian history may feel differently about this book but my knowledge is limited and I found this very informative. Some parts were a bit dry, and at times the author assumes things without proof to support it, but that still didn't distract me from the fascinating lives of these six powerful women.

4/5 ⭐️ Overall this was an interesting read that delved into a few Egyptian queens that I had never heard of before! I just wish there had been less reference to modern events and politics, since I‘m listening for ancient history, not current events..

Day 21: Northern Africa

I'm trying to read more non-fiction this year so jumped into this audio, read by the author herself. It's an interesting enough book, I just have a personal pet peeve about "supposes", by which I mean feelings we have no real clue on are being cast upon the person in question because they must have felt like this, right? And just, we have no clue because people are strange and defy expectation so they may not have felt that.
Otherwise, good book.

Since my knowledge of Egyptian history is limited, I found this exploration of six queens of Egypt very interesting and informative. I'd only heard of Cleopatra and Nefertiti, but even those two I discovered my knowledge was woefully incomplete. 4 💥💥💥💥

I had to do it 🤣🤣🤣 “had” 🙄

I love books that remind us of the powerful women who came before us, successful or not. I especially love Cooney's telling of it. She ties these women of the past to women today and the ways that women have become heads of state and the result of their leadership in their countries. She reminds the reader that women have always had to tread carefully when in power.

Fascinating look at Egyptian royal women who ruled ancient Egypt. Cooney points out parallels and differences between them and later female rulers, and speculates that they were able to rule because the ruling class realized they were the best option for maintaining stability.

Fascinating!

This book exceeded my expectations. The writing is engaging and compelling. And best of all, I loved how the author, Kara Cooney, draws parallels between these women rulers of Ancient Egypt and the way women continue to be viewed and treated in leadership roles today due to the ongoing patriarchy.

This book traces six Egyptian queens, and ties their stories to today‘s news…with the subtlety of a sledgehammer. The comparisons were so drawn out and explicit, I wondered if Cooney thought we were stupid. Plus it was almost impressive how she managed to both beat the reader over the head with a feminist message and be sexist at the same time. This was a big miss for me.

This was disappointing, I felt the author was really shaping things to fit her agenda and that she wasn't quite sure what her agenda exactly was. Oh, well I guess I have time to make the valentine's table toppers now 😄

A fascinating subject, but definitely a book to be read in stages, with a notebook and pen by your side.
