Owen Foster has never wanted for anything. Then his mother shows up at his elite New Orleans boarding school cradling a bombshell: his privileged life has been funded by stolen money. After using the family business, the single largest employer in his small Louisiana town, to embezzle millions and drain the employees' retirement accounts, Owen's father vanished without a trace, leaving Owen and his mother to deal with the fallout. Owen returns to Lake Cane to finish his senior year, where people he can barely remember despise him for his father's crimes. It's bad enough dealing with muttered insults and glares, but when Owen and his mother receive increasingly frightening threats from someone out for revenge, he knows he must get to the bottom of what really happened at Louisiana Frac--and the cryptic note his father sent him at his boarding school days before disappearing. Owen's only refuge is the sprawling, isolated pecan orchard he works at after school, owned by a man named Gus who has his own secrets--and in some ways seems to know Owen better than he knows himself. As Owen uncovers a terrible injustice that looms over the same Preacher Woods he's claimed as his own, he must face a shocking truth about his own past--and write a better future.

This was fast paced, twisty, and compelling but also down to earth and believable. I liked the characters-how earnest and engaging they were while still being a little complicated. I don‘t want to say much because going in blind, like I did, may be the best way to experience this mystery. This has been on my #TBR for way too long, so glad that #Roll100 moved this up! #Bookspin #Doublespin @TheAromaofBooks @PuddleJumper

Two time lines, a mystery, and two love stories made this YA story a quick read, and thoroughly enjoyable.

THE DETAILS ⤏ SLOW-BURNING SOUTHERN CHARM ⤏ A LITTLE TWISTY KNOT OF A MYSTERY ⤏ YA-TEEN LIFE ⤏ TOLD IN ALTERNATING TIMELINES WITH TWO POV'S ⤏ PECAN TREES...I LOVE ME SOME PECANS
MY REVIEW IN ONE SENTENCE⤏ Such an interesting little mystery set in small-town Georgia, that really surprised me with its genuine characters and they're true to life struggles.

I have to admit, I really enjoyed this YA mystery. When his dad embezzles money from the biggest business in town & ruins everyone, Owen‘s life of luxury ends abruptly. He returns home, desperate for answers & concerned for his mother who is getting threatening letters. With an engaging lead & great secondary characters, a plot moving between events in the present & 17 (or so) years earlier, & a twist or two, this is a fun read. Recommended.

Spent some time video chatting with the nieces today and now I‘m diving into The Lying Woods. I loved This Is Our Story so I‘m looking forward to this one.
