The Snooty Bookshop
The Snooty Bookshop: Fifty Literary Postcards by Tom Gauld | Tom Gauld
15 posts | 7 read | 9 to read
Fifty comics from The Guardian, by Britains most well regarded cartoonist Tom Gauld (Mooncop, Youre All Just Jealous of My Jetpack, Goliath) has created countless iconic strips for The Guardian over the course of his illustrious career. A master of condensing grand, highbrow themes into one- to eight-panel comics, his weekly strips embody his trademark British humor while simultaneously opening comics to an audience unfamiliar with the artistry that cartooning has to offer. Funny but serious, these comics allow Gauld to put his impressive knowledge of history, literature, and pop culture on full displayhis impeccable timing and distinctive visual style setting him apart from the rest. This postcard set celebrates more than a decade of Gaulds contributions to The Guardian, with fifty of his most beloved strips, on everything from Samuel Becketts sitcom pitches (such as Waiting for Kramer: a show where two men await the arrival of a man named Kramer who never comes), Procrastination for Creative Writers, a 10-Week Course, and Poetry Anthologies for People Who Dont Like Poems. Witty and beautifully drawn, The Snooty Bookshop will make you chuckle at least fifty times, guaranteed.

I‘ve been thinking a lot about #holidaytradition things since the #wintergames2021 started - as a 25yo who moved into my own place just before the pandemic, and then had to move out again after lockdown, I‘m in a position of having a lot of childhood traditions that don‘t rly happen anymore and a lot of new traditions that are just getting started.

So here‘s a new one - being my parents‘ ‘wine consultant‘ for the holidays (continued in comments)

Emilymdxn I started doing this last year and am delighted to continue this one and hopefully lots more years to come #mistletoemaniacs @Clwojick 2y

Clwojick I love this tradition! I guess this is sort of the same for me as well, since I'm always in charge of picking the wine for our family holiday dinners, as the others don't drink wine much. i honestly just ordered 8 bottles this morning, so I can have some on hand for gifts! I chose all new ones this time! 🍷 2y
BarbaraBB Great tradition. I love being in charge of the wine too ever since I followed an intensive wine course. To be honest I became a bit obsessed about it wine 🍷 😀 2y

BiblioLitten Spoilt for choice 😂 3y
vivastory @BiblioLitten Right?! 😂📚📚 3y
Sharv_Sona I love all the options... Except for the first one, it's way to boring. Wouldn't you rather have a book read to you through a megaphone? 3y

A charming collection of cartoons that is a great introduction to Gauld's work. If you want to send them to people, probably best to buy two copies so you can keep one for yourself 😉

Puns, and wit, and snooty snark abound in these cartoons from Tom Gauld. I absolutely love that they collected just the literary ones for us in this chunky little brick of a book. Has a lovely hardcover on it even though the postcards do feel like they could be torn out. If you were a heathen who vandalizes books, that is. Five stars and thanks to @Jess_Read_This for the perfect gift!
