Killing the SS
Killing the SS: The Hunt for the Worst War Criminals in History | Bill O'Reilly, Martin Dugard
14 posts | 20 read | 12 to read
Confronting Nazi evil is the subject of the latest installment in the mega-bestselling Killing series As the true horrors of the Third Reich began to be exposed immediately after World War II, the Nazi war criminals who committed genocide went on the run. A few were swiftly caught, including the notorious SS leader, Heinrich Himmler. Others, however, evaded capture through a sophisticated Nazi organization designed to hide them. Among those war criminals were Josef Mengele, the Angel of Death who performed hideous medical experiments at Auschwitz; Martin Bormann, Hitlers brutal personal secretary; Klaus Barbie, the cruel "Butcher of Lyon"; and perhaps the most awful Nazi of all: Adolf Eichmann. Killing the SS is the epic saga of the espionage and daring waged by self-styled "Nazi hunters." This determined and disparate group included a French husband and wife team, an American lawyer who served in the army on D-Day, a German prosecutor who had signed an oath to the Nazi Party, Israeli Mossad agents, and a death camp survivor. Over decades, these men and women scoured the world, tracking down the SS fugitives and bringing them to justice, which often meant death. Written in the fast-paced style of the Killing series, Killing the SS will educate and stun the reader. The final chapter is truly shocking.

I found this book very educational and was grateful to find that it wasn‘t as graphic as I expected it to be. It‘s a very facts based book that doesn‘t feel the need to go into the horror of these crimes for dramatic effect. It is by no means a bedtime story but I would recommend it to teens and even young teens who are looking for a reliable source as an entire to this tragic time in history. #52challenge

I‘m glad Bill O‘Reilly narrated it. There was one in his series that he didn‘t. This book wasn‘t as good as Killing Kennedy, Killing Lincoln or Killing Jesus. I did learn a lot though. I rated it 3 stars. I didn‘t read this for any of my challenges.

Just ok. 2.5/5 ⭐ this book started out with a lot of potential, especially the hunt for Eichmann. From the middle to end of book it went downhill. I must say I learned a lot that I didn't know about the hunt for SS criminals and how many were just let go and never punished

Picked this up at library yesterday so I guess I'll read it next. Not sure if I want to know the horror, but #neverforget

Savedbygrace I did not realize he had this one out; is it new? 5y

It is surprising to me how many of the top SS war criminals were never caught. This book focuses on Adolph Eichmann, Josef Mengele, Klaus Barbie, Martin Bormann and the Nazi hunters who wouldn't rest until they were found. This was a serious page turner. 👍

Crazeedi I definitely want to read this, I've heard of many who were never caught which is a crime (edited) 5y

I can't even imagine. 😢

jenreads7 I can‘t either. It‘s horrific. 😭😭😭 5y
GingerAntics Wow. People had to live through those camps. Even more people had to live through getting the people out. I don‘t understand how anyone can deny such things happened: how sick they have to be, how cold and callous, how twisted. 5y

quietlycuriouskate Scrolling past that just isn't an option. 😩 5y
Rachbb3 @GingerAntics I know. It's hard to think about what atrocities humanity is capable of. 5y
GingerAntics I know. It really does seem that the deadliest creature on earth is the human. 5y

I love history and WWII is a favorite study of mine. I knew many of the stories and people mentioned in the book but some I did not. A good read with lots of history. And oddly fitting i started reading it in Holocaust Remembrance Day.

A disturbing book. What the SS done to Jews and others they found unworthy is a travisty. Only by remembering the past, can we hopefully not repeat it.

I really enjoyed this book. It wasn‘t so in depth that it was drudgery but moved along fast enough that I actually finished it two days.

KTOHARA I can't wait to read it! There's a long list at the library. I'm hoping they'll buy more copies! Was it really depressing? Some of the Holocaust books are more than I can handle. 5y
Bookishlie @KTOHARA so it does get a bit descriptive of what some of the people did but it focuses more on the search and history of the searches then atrocities. 5y
KTOHARA Thanks so much! I'm sure I'll enjoy it! 5y
