Blame: A Novel | Michelle Huneven
5 posts | 11 read | 10 to read
Michelle Huneven, Richard Russo once wrote, is "a writer of extraordinary and thrilling talent." That talent explodes with her third book, Blame, a spellbinding novel of guilt and love, family and shame, sobriety and the lack of it, and the moral ambiguities that ensnare us all. The story: Patsy MacLemoore, a history professor in her late twenties with a brand-new Ph.D. from Berkeley and a wild streak, wakes up in jailyet againafter another epic alcoholic blackout. "Okay, what'd I do?" she asks her lawyer and jailers. "I really don't remember." She adds, jokingly: "Did I kill someone?" In fact, two Jehovah's Witnesses, a mother and daughter, are dead, run over in Patsy's driveway. Patsy, who was driving with a revoked license, will spend the rest of her lifein prison, getting sober, finding a new community (and a husband) in AAtrying to atone for this unpardonable act. Then, decades later, another unimaginable piece of information turns up. For the reader, it is an electrifying moment, a joyous, fall-off-the-couch-with-surprise moment. For Patsy, it is more complicated. Blame must be reapportioned, her life reassessed. What does it mean that her life has been based on wrong assumptions? What can she cleave to? What must be relinquished? When Huneven's first novel, Round Rock, was published, Valerie Miner, in the Los Angeles Times Book Review, celebrated Huneven's "moral nerve, sharp wit and uncommon generosity." The same spirit electrifies Blame. The novel crackles with lifeand, like life, can leave you breathless.

Another deep, quiet book this month. This exploration of grief and forgiveness was very good.

Patsy wakes up hungover in jail. She figures it‘s just another DUI until she finds out a mother and daughter are dead. She joins AA in prison, and you follow her there and then after she‘s released and in a sober marriage. The last bit 20 years later was quite a surprise, but I wish Huneven had dug more deeply into Patsy‘s time with the victims‘ family.

Megabooks New bookshelves in progress!! So far, I‘m quite pleased, but things are a mess! Thank you for sending this @Cinfhen 😘😘 #GiftedByALitten #Booked2023 @BarbaraTheBibliophage @alisiakae (edited) 1y

Patsy has a new PhD & a blackout level drinking problem. She wakes up in jail ,being told 2 people have died in her driveway hit by her car.She remembers nothing. This book has a quiet emotional quality of how a person picks up the pieces after dealing with the consequences of an event like that. There is a twist toward the end. What comes thru is to question the decisions we make , the relationships we cultivate ,& how things might be different.

Alfoster Wowie! This looks like my kind of book!😘 6y
Leftcoastzen @Alfoster Funny thing, I was ordering from one of those sale book companies and needed one more for free shipping, read description and thought, sounds pretty good .Nice when that happens and it‘s good. 6y

#GetMovin #wasted This novel still on my TBR. Patsy has just gotten her PhD.She wakes up in jail (not the first time)after an alcoholic blackout.A mother and daughter are dead , run over in her driveway. Anybody read this? I read a lot of fiction & non-fiction related to drinking, a lot of famous writers drank. Our sometimes complex relationship w/ drink through the ages has generated lots of good reading. Stay thirsty my friends .

Billypar This sounds well within my wheelhouse...stacked! 6y
Cinfhen It does sound good...cheers 🍻 6y
