Mehso-so

Follows the same formula as I Claudius—same framing, same dry prose—but without a Caligula to stir things up, the results are less satisfying.

My knowledge of Roman nobility was pretty much nonexistent until recently. So, regardless of the slog that this book kinda was, I am glad to say that I am a more learned man for having read it. The audiobook includes some short historical biographies after Claudius‘s death, which was an unexpected bonus!

Claudius: What a mess. I think I'll tidy things up a bit before restoring the Republic.

Also, Claudius: The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire. We don't need no water let the motherf***** burn.

My fellow readers.....hidden within the pages of the book is a foldout family tree of "The Royal Family of the Herods." ?

Ddzmini That‘s amazing 😉 6y

The start of the book is almost exclusively focused on the goings-on of Herod Agrippa et al. It's slow going as I'm finding it difficult to focus.

Book: Herod's granddad married 10 wives and 2 of them were his own nieces.
Me: But, what about Claudius?
Book: Herod's sister married 2 of Herod's uncle's.
Me: Mhmm. BUT, WHAT ABOUT CLAUDIUS?
Book: Herod owes a shit-ton of money. It's not looking too good for Herod.
Me: WHAT 👏 ABOUT 👏 CLAUDIUS 👏?!

saresmoore 😂 Brilliant synopsis! 6y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk Double check the cover. You might have picked up I, Herod 6y

More Claudius? Yes, please!

The school librarian scooped this copy out of storage for me. Apparently, this book hasn't been checked out in over 10 years. Now it's sharing selfies on Litsy. It catches on quick.

saresmoore Books are so adaptable. 6y
diovival @saresmoore I had to take 30 pictures before it felt I truly captured its good side 6y
saresmoore It‘s one of those special library finds I‘d be maliciously tempted to keep. 6y

1. So difficult!I'll go with historical fiction.
2. Definitely yes to Fantasy
3. Fin-de-siecle Vienna, and the Tudors
4. Claudius, at least he tried. And he was the best of a dreadful bunch.

Gezemice Claudius is my favorite of all time! 6y

I love history and historical fiction and I am addicted to listchallenges.com. I have made a list of historical books that are not romances. I don‘t want my historical fiction to be a romance, and nowadays that seems a steep requirement. If you like history but don‘t like it to involve bodice ripping, check my list out.

The Claudius books are my all-time faves.

Melissa_J This is great! Historical fiction is one of my favourite genres and I, too, dislike historical romance. 7y
Gezemice @Melissa_J I am glad you like it and I am not alone 😊 7y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Cool! Thanks for the list! And the Claudius books have been in my TBR for a while - need to bump up 7y

Gezemice @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled They are so good. I re-read them every few years. If you like history, they are a must-read. 7y
drokka I only got 12% but I have two bookcases of history and historical fiction that aren't romances not included in this list. 7y
Gezemice @drokka Awesome, maybe you need to make your own list! These are just the ones I read. I would love to see yours! 7y
drokka I could, would take me a day or two lol 7y
Gezemice @drokka That‘s really cool. So which one is your favorite? 7y
drokka That's a tough one. I'll do a top few historical fictions list. In no particular order: Silk Road by Colon Falconer; The Whale Road by Robert Low (also like his Lion Wakes); Corrag by Susan Fletcher; Pompeii by Richard Harris (The Officer and the Spy is good too); M.C. Scott's Rome series; and hole host of historical mysteries. 7y
Gezemice @drokka Cool, I must check them out, thanks! 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Great list! 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa 16% and a few are on my list to read this year. 7y
Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Awesome! Which ones? 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice For this year, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, Lamb, Memoirs of Hadrian, Fredrick Douglas, Homegoing, The Book Thief, Night, catch-22, are all on my hope to read this year list. 7y
Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Those are all amazing. I read most. Night and Memoirs of Hadrian are slated for this year as well. 7y

#kingoftheworld #characters2017 @LibrarianRyan I am due for a re-read of the Claudius novels.

Gezemice My favorite! 7y
mjdowens I picked them up in a used book store and could not believe just at how good they were. 7y
Seshat Cool, @mjdowens I found them in my college library and read them when I was getting my B.A. They weren't assigned. I had finished finals early and needed something to read. 😀 7y
