The Book of Flora
The Book of Flora | Meg Elison

In this Philip K. Dick Award-winning series, one woman's unknowable destiny depends on a bold new step in human evolution. In the wake of the apocalypse, Flora has come of age in a highly gendered post-plague society where females have become a precious, coveted, hunted, and endangered commodity. But Flora does not participate in the economy that trades in bodies. An anathema in a world that prizes procreation above all else, she is an outsider everywhere she goes, including the thriving all-female city of Shy. Now navigating a blighted landscape, Flora, her friends, and a sullen young slave she adopts as her own child leave their oppressive pasts behind to find their place in the world. They seek refuge aboard a ship where gender is fluid, where the dynamic is uneasy, and where rumors flow of a bold new reproductive strategy. When the promise of a miraculous hope for humanity's future tears Flora's makeshift family asunder, she must choose: protect the safe haven she's built or risk everything to defy oppression, whatever its provenance.

What I Loved: The reverence for books in the story & the LGBTQ+ stories
How I Felt: The army plot was less important in this book. It focused on the character‘s self-discovery
Read or Not Read: Read this if you‘ve read the first two in the series
The Book of Flora starts after Etta with Flora narrating. It jumps back and forth between her present & past.

Hmm, I finished this but just barely. I usually don‘t finish books when I dislike them this much but I wanted to give Elison a fair shake. This was an extremely uninteresting and unmoving end to the trilogy. Don‘t want to spoil it but the characters are wooden and there is a love triangle that is simply boring. This read like a developmental draft, not a finished product. Still I would read more from Elison since the first two books 👇🏽

Smrloomis were really interesting. But this one was just so disappointing! 👎🏽 5y
Smrloomis @kyraleseberg you were right 😭 5y
kyraleseberg @Smrloomis I loved the first two so much, I was in shock over this one. I completely agree this felt like an early draft. I have no idea if the author was rushed to finish or just ready to be done but either way it felt like they didn't have time to flesh out the story at all. 5y
Smrloomis @kyraleseberg So true and very disappointing 😔 5y

I liked this much better than the Book of Etta - it felt a little closer to the original book which is still the best in my opinion. I liked the jumps from different times and POVs in here. And as always I enjoyed the diary style of writing. We got more world building and saw how other communities live in this post apocalyptic world too - for better and worse.

shejustlovesbooks I agree! I am almost done with this and I am enjoying it much more than The Book of Etta! I like seeing the what is happening in the world and I felt like we got this with Book of Flora. 4y

This book didn't knock my socks off, but I did enjoy it. I think the first book was my favourite. I did like Flora and the secondary characters. And, it is one of those books that get you thinking about the world and possible futures. The trilogy as a whole definitely touches on a lot of subjects. So, ultimately I am happy I read it, and I do recommend it, but not something I consider a favourite read ever. I listened to the audio & liked it.

Hello, my pretties!

Going to dive in and do a reread of the whole series because I can‘t remember especially what happened in The Book of Etta.

Oh man! I sorta forgot about this series! The third book is coming out next week! I put some Amazon points to good use to get it. I wasn‘t a huge fan of the second book (it was getting a little much) but I look forward to seeing how the series ends.

Super stoked for this release next week! I adore the way Meg Ellison crafts her post-apocalyptic world and the characters she populates it with, and I really can‘t wait to read Flora‘s book.

This is book 3 in Meg Elison‘s Road to Nowhere trilogy. I did not enjoy this as much as the others. The focus is no longer on survival and community building in the post-apocalyptic era (thus book starts right where The Book of Etta ended). The focus here ison lgbtq, catamites, horsewomen, and other who do not fit the male/female gender dichotomy who are looking for a community where they can be accepted and safe. See comments for more.

DreesReads Elison continues her world building as the characters travel to different communities—but she is unable to give any one the justice it deserves. I also thought all the traveling (lots!) creates a continuity problem from book 2, where traveling is difficult and dangerous, especially for women. Still an interesting read, but does not live up to The Book of the Unnamed Midwife (book 1, Philip K Dick award winner). #postapocalyptic (edited) 5y
