Woman in the Dunes
Woman in the Dunes | K?b? Abe
This contemporary Japanese novel combines elements of myth, suspense, and existentialism. In a remote seaside village, Niki Jumpei, a teacher and amateur entomologist, is held captive with a young woman at the bottom of a sand pit, where they must shovel off the ever-advancing sand dunes.

At its most basic, Woman in the Dunes is a metaphor for human existence. We are all of us stuck in a hole trying to get out. Attempting to understand that which is the hardest to comprehend: the meaning of self, the motives of other human beings, the point of suffering, and other such existential questions. Bleak and masterfully written.

Listened to on Audible — Julian Cihi nailed the narration.

#triplebookspin #bookspin complete! Thank you @TheAromaofBooks for the challenge, it is so good to get these off the shelf.
This was a fast and interesting read, but I found myself often confused by the timeline and what was reality. Written in the 60's and from Japan the confusion could be in translation.

TheAromaofBooks I frequently have some trouble with novels translated from Japanese - I'm not sure if it's the writing style or the language that doesn't seem to flow into English very well?? I also wonder if only “academic“ novels tend to get translated - sort of the Japanese versions of The Great Gatsby & The Grapes of Wrath - not bad books by any means, but also not necessarily “typical“ stories, if that makes sense. Anyway, great review!! 5y
CaliforniaCay Your reading space looks so cozy 🥰 5y
ChaoticMissAdventures @TheAromaofBooks yes, I often wonder, but then I read books like Out by Kirino which flows fine. I also find books from the 60-70's are fairly experimental and that might be the case here. 5y
ChaoticMissAdventures @CaliforniaCay thanks! I have found velvet furniture is the best for my Siamese cat who sheds an insane amount! Bonus is it's also lush and pretty! 5y

"As long as the winds blew, the rivers flowed, and the seas stirred, sand would be born grain by grain from the earth, and like a living being it would creep everywhere. The sands never rested. Gently but surely they invaded and destroyed the surface of the earth."

"The beauty of sand, in other words, belonged to death. It was the beauty of death that ran through the magnificence of its ruins and its great power of destruction."

I feel like I have been slacking on my evening reading this week because instead of books I've been trying to get this pin cushion to like me.

drokka Give it time, and food. Food is a great way to get critters to trust. Also, handling. He/she is adorable. 🐹(no hedgehog emote sadly) 8y
Emiller So cute! 8y
meltedsquirrel @drokka we've definitely been making more progress. She even allowed belly rubs this morning. 8y

Days off at our house: I just wandered back into the living room after claiming I was going to take a bath and whined "I finished my bathtub book during our naptime" Hubsband just stared at me with an open mouth before proclaiming "My toddler wife"

#somethingforsept #septphotochallenge I have a bit of a thing for works of translated fiction. There's just something about a (well-done) translation that adds a new dimension and/or perspective to the language. Things being described in a way I've never seen before, etc. Kobo Abe in particular is one of my favourite authors for the way his crazy plot lines seem so utterly realistic and normal. ❤️

vivastory Abe is an author I've wanted to explore more. I read and loved Box Man. 8y
