The Guilty Feminist
The Guilty Feminist: From our noble goals to our worst hypocrisies | Deborah Frances-White
15 posts | 8 read | 2 reading | 14 to read
'This really is the "everything you have always wanted to know about feminism but were afraid to ask" manual. From a mind as lucid and witty as it is kind and empathetic comes essential reading for the planet.' EMMA THOMPSON In 2015 I described myself as 'guilty feminist' for the first time. My goals were noble but my concerns were trivial. I desperately wanted to close the pay gap, but I also wanted to look good sitting down naked. A funny, joyful, frank and inspiring book about embracing both feminism and our imperfections, from the creator of the hit comedy podcast, Deborah Frances-White. From inclusion to the secret autonomy in rom coms, from effective activism to what poker can tell us about power structures, Deborah explores what it means to be a twenty-first-century feminist, and encourages us to make the world better for everyone. The book also includes exclusive interviews with performers, activists and thinkers - Jessamyn Stanley, Zoe Coombs Marr, Susan Wokoma, Bisha K. Ali, Reubs Walsh, Becca Bunce, Amika George, Mo Mansfied and Leyla Hussein - plus a piece from Hannah Gadsby. Praise for THE GUILTY FEMINIST podcast: 'Hilarious, irreverent, eternally surprising, classy as hell, genius comedians ... It's shows like this that breathe life into conversations about feminism' Phoebe Waller-Bridge 'Tackles issues from democracy to sexuality to porn with a lightness and hilarity that makes even the newly ordained feminist feel at home' Scarlett Curtis, Sunday Times 'Wildly successful ... The Guilty Feminist addresses the major feminist issues of the twenty-first century while also celebrating our glorious imperfections' Marie Claire Australia

Updated #14books14weeks2023 list
Next week! How did it come so fast.
I am working on getting some of the oldest books off my TBR bookcase. I have had some of these for seriously maybe a decade. Why have I not read them?

@TheHeartlandBookFairy

TheHeartlandBookFairy Excellent question! I have the same problem but no answer LOL. 2y

Decided to read the book after listening to a bunch of episodes of the podcast and loved both of them! Frances-White does an excellent job of combining humor, practical advice, and personal experience. The book was the perfect length. It had a great amount of intersectionality and diverse perspectives. I didn‘t find any part of the book boring or irrelevant. I‘ll continue listening to the podcast and hope she writes more books!

I love Deborah Frances-White's Guilty Feminist podcast so I had to get around to reading her book at some point. One of todays most inspirational and inclusive feminists

What a great read. Witty, really insightful, and really have me some food for though, particularly around intersectional feminism, and my own white privilege.

Some very funny bits, some bits I skimmed over, some bits I was really interested in.
A good overall read about the challenges of today‘s feminism.

merelybookish Just listened to an interview with her. Had never heard of her before and left uncertain whether I'd want to read her book. So glad to see your thoughts. 4y
TrishB @merelybookish I took away some ideas of how to use my privilege of white feminism to help others that are nowhere near the western white benchmark. I agreed with a lot of the authors writing but those I disagreed with were also fine, different perspectives. I had never heard of her, but both my kids had and had listened to her podcast. 4y
Kalalalatja I listened to her podcast quite a lot. She is definitely funny! 4y
TrishB @Kalalalatja I may give her a listen! 4y

I came home from work early as I‘ve done something to my back and it‘s so painful. I‘ve found myself drifting in and out of sleep all afternoon, so have been unable to read. Now browsing The Literary Gift Co. and making a wish list for Christmas as they have so many cool book things!

I had a fantastic night at The Guilty Feminist podcast recording on Tuesday! Deborah Frances-White is one of my heroes and it was fantastic to see her live. Kate and Charlotte were fantastic too. I‘m getting ready to read the tagged book again as it had a profound effect on me when I first read it.

The Guilty Feminist podcast is just great. Definitely 5 stars on iTunes! Deborah and Sofie are brilliant. They are both doing solid work for feminism...long may it continue! I read the book earlier this year and it had quite a profound effect on me. The podcast is doing the same. Definitely worth reading and listening to 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

mariaku21 Will have to look this up! Thanks 💛 5y
Connster @mariaku21 Awesome! It‘s one that really makes you think about how you speak and how you advocate for others. It‘s great! 😊 5y

I enjoyed this book. A different and readable take on Feminism in the Brexit/Trump era. Lots of interesting interviews with feminists too!

I love The Guilty Feminist podcast, and all the amazing things I learn from it. I‘m especially excited about the musical Suffrageddon, which is trying to get funded and put into production. It is written and performed by WoC, and the snippets which have been performed on the podcast sound awesome 🙌
