This witty, heartfelt story about perseverance in the face of adversity is perfect for fans of R. J. Palacio, Cammie McGovern, and John David Anderson. Noah Savino has been stuck in a wheelchair for months. He hates the way people treat him like hes helpless now. Hes sick of going to physical therapy, where he isnt making any progress. Hes tired of not having control over his own body. And he misses playing baseballbut not as much as he misses his dad, who died in the car accident that paralyzed Noah. Noah is scared hell never feel like his old self again. He doesnt want people to think of him as different for the rest of his life. With the help of family and friends, hell have to throw off the mask hes been hiding behind and face the fears that have kept him on the sidelines if he ever wants to move forward.

I‘m sure there are several books on my shelf that I could use for this prompt, but this is the first one I thought of. Noah was recently paralyzed in a car crash that also killed his father, so there are some serious topics in this book. I also loved the Missouri setting and St. Louis Cardinals references.

Karisimo Ooh! I‘m a huge Cards fan! I can‘t believe I haven‘t read this! 5mo
Coffeymuse You sold me on the Cardinals reference-that's my baseball team! Definitely adding this to Mt TBR! 5mo
Daisey @Karisimo @Coffeymuse I teach JH in Missouri, so each year I look up the Truman award preliminary nominee list and try to read as many as possible. It often includes a book or two with a Missouri connection. That‘s how I found this one. 5mo
Coffeymuse @Daisey I grew up in MO and now live in OK. OK was the Sequoyah Book Awards. Definitely going to check out the Truman Awards! 5mo

September turned out to be a pretty great reading month. I thoroughly enjoyed the middle grade books I read. With those, the Binti trilogy, and a few others, I read 10 print books and only 1 ebook this month, which is really unusual for me.

jewright This is impressive! My reading has nose-dived completely since school started. October is going to be even worse because I read some over Labor Day weekend. 5y
Daisey @jewright Thanks! Reading books from my class library really ups the book count. 5y

Noah is dealing with some tough issues in this story after a car accident killed his father and left him in a wheelchair. The personalities of the characters and the friendships that developed between them are great, leading to some important points as well as laugh out loud moments. I also especially appreciated the St. Louis setting and the appearance of Cardinals‘ mascot Fredbird.

Happy Saturday! It‘s another beautiful day, so I‘m alternating chores around the house with reading time in the hammock. I‘m planning to do some catching up on our #LotRHistory readalong, and I‘m trying to get back in the habit of reading more middle grade and YA books to make better book recommendations to my students. I just started Mascot, but it was fun to realize it‘s set in St. Louis.

JazzFeathers I need to maje some serious catch up too. Last week l listvall my reading time so some crazy overtime at work 😭 5y
Daisey @JazzFeathers I haven‘t made it as far as I hoped, so I completely understand. With lots of school work and such I‘m more in the mood for light reading than over 50 pages of Tolkien notes. So, although I‘m making progress I doubt I‘ll catch up yet. 5y
