This book is great for discussions on acceptance in the classroom and familiarizing your students with the idea of transgender individuals. Picture books are a great tool for introducing ideas and concepts that children may not be familiar with yet.

This book uses its illustrations by Kaylani Juanita to show the reader how Aidan is feeling through the emotions present on his face. Emotion is shown in the book predominantly through Aidan‘s eyes as he deals with the reactions of strangers as his mother prepares to have another baby. The colors and line work on the pages brings the eye along from one illustration to the next.
A lovely story about a child who knew he was a boy, and whose parents accepted that. The three of them, especially Aidan, want to make sure they don‘t make the same mistakes with the new baby. This is a great lesson for siblings & parents about not assuming gender and how you can alter your way of thinking and actions.

#TransRightsReadathon Day 4 Flare day today & am not up to reading anything taxing, which gave me the perfect opportunity to check out some picture books for the readathon.
When Aiden Became a Brother is by Kyle Lukoff & I‘d describe it as happysad. It does a truly remarkable job of capturing feelings of fear, discrimination & dysphoria experienced by trans kids even when they‘re completely surrounded by loving support systems from a young age.
Published in 2019, this story won the Stonewall Book award. The stonewall book award focuses on the LGBTQ+ community. This is a story about a young transgender boy who gets a little sibling. It talks about Aidans struggle of growing up as a female and figuring out that he wants to be a boy. I would read this story to my children, because I think it can help students to understand the LGBTQ+ community.
Published in 2019, this book tells the story of Aiden who was born, and everyone thought he was a girl. Once Aidan realized he was a trans boy, Aiden and his parents changed the parts of his life that didn‘t fit anymore and settled happily into his new life. Then, his parents announce they‘re going to have another baby and Aidan wants to do everything they can to help. This story celebrates the many transitions a family can experience.
This story is about a transgender child that is soon going to be a big brother! He grew up not being like the rest of his friends and began transitioning as a young child. His family was very supportive throughout the process and when asked about the unborn baby's gender they replied “it's a baby“. This made Aidan grateful and he hoped that his baby sibling could be who they want to be just like he is. The book received the “Stonewall book award“.
When Aidan Became a Brother by Kyle Lukoff is a Stonewall Book Award. Aidan was born with a girl name and girl clothes. He never felt happy in his room and with his name. He was able to be himself and wear boy clothes and changed his name. His parents were very accepting. Aidans mom found out she was having a baby. They learned from Aidan to let the baby decide their gender and they picked gender neutral things for the baby.
Aidan is transgendered and is very excited to be a big brother. He remembers his struggles as he voiced his own identity, so has concerns about doing everything right for the new baby. This book explores themes of love and acceptance and finding oneself. The illustrations add to the warmness of the message.
Challenged by groups for its “mature” content and message.
It‘s a fabulous read! #PictureBook #BBRC #LetterW
It's so wonderful that more and more picture books are being written with LGBTQ+ characters. This one is about a little trans boy named Aidan and how he prepares to be a new big brother. The book has a lovely art style and is keen to point out the many different ways to express gender and the importance of not assuming one's gender.
