Well, while it‘s still snowing at home, I‘ve found a couple nice, warm, sunny spots to read while on a work trip further south in Alaska, and I am loving soaking up the vitamin D. I had a yummy mocha earlier and now sipping on a strawberry basil smash canned cocktail. Wishing I had packed sunglasses today!

This was the appropriately named brewery in Charlotte, NC that I hung out at yesterday!

vivastory I loved this book. Hope you had a good trip! 1mo
Kimberlone Thanks! Loving her insights so far. Surprisingly, I‘ve never read a book by Jane Smiley, but this might be the impetus to finally dig into A Thousand Acres, which I‘ve had a copy of for I can‘t remember how long! (edited) 1mo
BarkingMadRead I don‘t think we‘ve been to this brewery yet, I‘ll have to tell my hubs about it 1mo

Kimberlone @BarkingMadRead it is in the same area as OMB and Brewers @ 4001 Yancey. I really liked this sour! The flavors were subtle but really complemented the sour ale! If you are in Charlotte, let me know if you have a good bookstore recommendation…I have some free time tomorrow before I have to drive back to Raleigh for my flight home. 1mo
BarkingMadRead Where in Charlotte are you? There‘s one called Park Road books that‘s in the same plaza as a yummy bakery and also a Jeni‘s ice cream! 1mo
Kimberlone @BarkingMadRead I saw that one in my research but it was a bit out of my way when I looked. Might try to fit it in tomorrow, if I have the time. Trying not to have to rush my drive back to Raleigh! 1mo

In Charlotte, NC for a work trip this week, and yesterday I spent some time at a local brewery with the book I brought. Book accompanied by a yummy pretzel and tasty Plum-Rosemary-Orange Sour Ale. I was impressed, you can really taste the rosemary in this drink!

Side note: any Charlotte/Raleigh Littens around? I have one more day here (I have to drive back to Raleigh tomorrow from Charlotte) and would love a good bookstore recommendation!

Gogobooks This is true of me: I find it a little weird. Yet, anything benignly comforting is good🙂 3y
Nute @Ubookquitous Agree!🙂 3y
Nute @Gogobooks Yes! A crazy, hectic and stressful day at work quite often spurs a spontaneous trip to the bookstore. Many times I don‘t make a purchase. It‘s just the environment...the sight and smell of books provides relief and comfort.🙂 3y

I first read this in April & immediately knew that it would end up being one of my favorites of the year. I have decided to reread Smiley's elegant history/thoroughly engaging analysis of the novel. The art form I #cherish above all others.

Pickpick

Smiley's title is based on Wallace Stevens' haiku-like, influential 1954 poem, "Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird." Stevens dealt in the realm of poetry (& insurance); Smiley is concerned with the novel, which she defines as: a lengthy, written, prose narrative, with a protagonist. Smiley was working on a rough draft of her novel, "Good Faith" when 9/11 happened. She writes that the events left her stunned & unable to work on her novel. ?

vivastory In order to make sense of what had happened & move forward she began writing the tagged book. The first one half, 280 pages, of "13 ways" are essays concerning the novel, while the second half is comprised of mini-essays of 100 books that she calls congenial & uncongenial, but all worth the effort. Her list spans from The Tale of Genji to Egan's Look at Me. Smiley meant for the second half to be dipped into randomly, not read straight through ? 5y
vivastory "In search of a cohesive argument." I took her advice on the second half; but I was positively mesmerized & enraptured by the first half. In an informed, & accessible, manner, Smiley details the historical & democratic origins of the novel. The complexities & the irreducibility of the novel as an art form are clearly & passionately articulated. Declining novel sales are noted at one point, especially amongst male readers.? 5y
vivastory However, this is not a defense of the novel, rather it is a celebration of what makes novels unique as well as the perennial relevance & perspective that classics afford the contemporary reader. 5y

SharonGoforth I read this when it first came out and loved it! I still dip into it every now and then. That‘s one I should definitely re-read! 5y
vivastory @SharonGoforth I will definitely be revisiting it. I highlighted a lot of passages. I was even fascinated by her insights in the chapters that were offering advice to aspiring novelists. I imagine I'll be gifting this frequently. 5y

Only 23 pages in, but I'm loving this one so far. A lot of passages I've marked. Also, the bright spring colors are perfect after a difficult winter!

“Many people, myself among them, feel better at the mere sight of a book"

So much truth in this bookish quote. All my cares and worries melt away at the first step and inhalation entering a bookstore.
