The Night Raven

Meet Lydia Crow... Lydia has always known she has no power, especially next to her infamous and more-than-slightly dodgy family. Which is why she carved her own life as a private investigator far away from London. When a professional snafu forces her home, the head of the family calls in a favour, and Lydia finds herself investigating the disappearance of her cousin, Maddie. Soon, Lydia is neck-deep in problems: her new flatmate is a homicidal ghost, the intriguing, but forbidden, DCI Fleet is acting in a distinctly unprofessional manner, and tensions between the old magical families are rising. The Crows used to rule the roost and rumours claim they are still the strongest. The Silvers have a facility for lying and they run the finest law firm in London. The Pearl family were costermongers and everybody knows that a Pearlie can sell feathers to a bird. The Fox family... Well. The less said about the Fox family the better. For seventy-five years, a truce between the four families has held strong, but could the disappearance of Maddie Crow be the thing to break it? The Night Raven is the first book in Crow Investigations, an exciting new paranormal mystery series from bestselling author of magical fiction, Sarah Painter. My favourite new urban fantasy series, clever and twisty and deliciously magical, with a shivery sense of wonder that feels utterly grounded in its London setting. Perfect for fans of Ben Aaronovitch, Genevieve Cogman or Robert Galbraith! Stephanie Burgis, author of Snowspelled and Masks and Shadows Clever and charming and funny and a bit creepy! #20in4 #readathon @Andrew65

Lydia Crow establishes her business as a magical private investigator in this first book in the series. She investigates the disappearance of her cousin, makes allies and possibly enemies.

Solid, but a bit boring for a mystery.

This was pretty boring. I was surprised that I only had an hour left of the audio because nothing happened. I feel like everything happened in the beginning and the rest was just her investigating. The mystery wasn‘t even that good. I think it was supposed to be more of a urban fantasy with a mystery and I thought of it the other way around.

katy4peas Interesting that it has “investigations” in the series title if it isn‘t really a mystery. That makes me think it centers around mysteries. 🤷‍♀️ 2y
Laughterhp @katy4peas She‘s a PI, so I guess that‘s the investigation part.. 🤷🏻‍♀️. Maybe the other books in the series are better.. but I‘m not going to find out lol 2y
Nessavamusic What a bummer! I‘m always looking for new UF so I guess I won‘t check this one out. 2y

This was an intriguing paranormal mystery, but I‘m still very confused at the end of it and there are enough things unresolved to leave me feeling rather unsatisfied.

This was my last read of September and I was really looking forward to it. I found it ok but it didn't fill me with the need to read the next books. Shame as I thought I would love this series. #books

A fun first book in this paranormal detective series set in a London rules by magical mafia families and Lydia Crow is the daughter of a man who got out who gets sucked back in as a favor to her uncle. I love this cover. 😍
