Fled: A Novel | Meg Keneally
8 posts | 4 read | 11 to read
Based on the life of an incredible historical heroine, a harrowing journey in search of love, justice, and freedom, told by the daughter of best-selling author Thomas Keneally (Schindler's List) Tall and lanky, more suited to sailing and fishing than to keeping a house, Jenny Gwyn has proven herself a survivor. When she's caught stealing to support her impoverished family, she and dozens of other convicts are sent across the world to help settle England's newest colony in Australia. After being contained on a filthy ship and selling her body for better rations, Jenny is shocked to see the place that will become her home. The harsh landscape of Sydney Cove isn't welcoming to its new settlers with it's arid climate and precious little fresh water. Even worse, she and the others are still prisoners under the strict watch of Governor Edward Lockharty, and no amount of cunning can earn his favor. Jenny refuses to submit to the Governor or to the barren land unable to support the growing population. Determined to find a better life for herself and her children, she braves the sea, and a journey of over three thousand miles in a small rowboat, for a chance at a future worth fighting for. Based on the true story of Mary Bryant, an iconic figure in the foundation lore of Australia as Great Britain's penal colony, Fled is a sweeping, heart-wrenching account of one woman's life-long search for freedom.

Historical fiction at its best. The author has written about real-life Mary Bryant with sensitivity & respect; her strengths, flaws, determination, pragmatism, grief all comes alive on the page and you really feel as though you know this woman. I admire the deft touch with which the author fills in the gaps in between known history & cried more than once. A vivid, compelling & often heartbreaking depiction of the life of a truly remarkable woman.

This was so good! I think it was first book I've read from an Australian author. The characters were so relatable and real! I've read from this time period before in history books but this made it feel alive and true. I loved that it was based on a true story! 😊

LeeRHarry Yay #ozfiction 🇦🇺 hope you read many more 😊 4y
Martta @LeeRHarry I should really take more notice where the books I read come from. It would be nice to read more versatile books. 😁 4y

I noticed that I've totally forgotten to update about this. I'm loving it! It's a story about the first convicts from Britain to move to Australia. Such an interesting topic! I've read something about this from the history books. 😊

Found the book bag on the right yesterday. I hope it will succesfully protect books in my backbag because they tend to get damaged sometimes. 📚

There have been other books that have imagined the life of Mary Bryant, here Jenny Gwyn but her story is new to me. I definitely enjoyed this one. I appreciated the portrayal of her tenacity and unwillingness to give up what little agency she had. This isn‘t really a feel good book but I was definitely hooked.

Next up! The book feels so new, I think I may be the first to read it, which makes me irrationally happy. Part of the joy of reading for me (and why I love buying new hardbacks) is that sense of discovery. Does that make sense?

readordierachel Makes total sense. It's a personal connection between you and the book 🙂 5y
JSW @readordierachel it was difficult for me to articulate. Thanks for validation!!! 😘 5y

Good. Based on true historical events this book takes you on a journey to Australia in the 1700's. Well researched but sometimes the writing was dragged down by it and the main story was lost sometimes. Overall a good read. Thank you #Readersfirst for the free copy
