This was good… he talked about his experience as a resident over the course of 5 years becoming a brain surgeon. He talked about successes, challenges and loss of life in the OR. One of the most interesting cases to me was a meningioma, which my mom had removed in 2015. Was good to hear it is one of the easiest to remove.

Who doesn‘t like stories about brain surgery?!? This was very interesting to me. Poignant, informative and full of heart.

Neurosurgeon Frank Vertosick describes his journey from being a apprehensive and eager medical student to a board certified neurosurgeon. He shares operating stories that are taut and graphic. He did not initially intend to become a neurosurgeon, but “strayed too close to a dangerously seductive profession and became stuck for good like a fly in a spider‘s web.” (Page 27)

Isabella.Pankhurst If you are interested in the medical field or having an inside view of an operating room then this book is for you.

This book is written in first person point of view, Dr. Frank Vertosick tells the story of his medical journey and experiences of becoming a neurosurgeon. Vertosick uses pronouns such as “I, We, us and our.”

Incredible. Dr. Vertosick is an intuitive doctor & a fabulous writer. This book holds extraordinary accounts of his neurosurgical residency. He expertly explains diseases/treatment relevant to the cases he‘s describing AND perfectly captures the intensity when something goes wrong and a life is on the line. Although the typical arrogant doctors pepper his stories as his superiors, Frank is not one. If you‘re interested in medicine, pick this up!

Here in the U.S., we generally believe all surgeons are arrogant SOB's. Vertosick's book is proof that not all surgeons fit that mold. If you like memoirs with a medical focus, this one is worth reading. The patient stories are heart-rending, and there's some dark humor. It was informative too. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

zsuzsanna_reads I'd also recommend the memoirs of Henry Marsh, a British brain surgeon. I really liked 7y

Started this one a day or so ago. It's an interesting view into the life of a neurosurgeon. A little grim, though.

Cathythoughts I loved When Breath Becomes Air / Kalanithi. Any similarities? Neurology is such a specialised field , I have a daughter nursing in this area. Keep us posted ? I'd be very interested to know how it goes 7y
rabbitprincess Every time I see this title I think of the song "That's Amore" ? 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @rabbitprincess OMG so funny! 🤣🤣 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cathythoughts Well, the author isn't a also patient so that's the biggest difference of course. But he talks about his progression from med student onward, as well as lots of interesting cases. It's pretty intense! 7y
Cathythoughts Thanks. I like the sound of the progression from med student onwards. I'll have a think 👍I love that song ! When the moon hits your eyes like a big pizza pie ❤️❤️🍕🍕🍕 (edited) 7y
