This YA love story between two girls at a Scottish boarding school was somehow exactly what I wanted to read in this moment. Amelia leaves her Texas home for a school in the Scottish Highlands only to meet and fall in love with a fellow classmate- who happens to be a princess. So much about this was utterly ridiculous (Scottish royal family?!) but I don't care one bit because it was sweet and fun and silly and don't we just need that sometimes?

can‘t say it‘s one of the better written books I‘ve read this year but it is a Scottish lesbian princess so I definitely didn‘t hate it

If love isn't like what Millie and Flora have, I don't want it. #yalit

Got to enjoy reading in my cozy corner on our new sectional!!! It turned out a lot bigger than we were thinking but we have enjoyed it so much already! Got to finish the tagged book and I love Millie she‘s such a different character!

GypsyKat That big corner looks perfect for curling up with a good book! Love it! ❤️ 5y
sb3626 @GypsyKat thank you! That‘s exactly what I thought when we ordered it! I called dibs! 5y

This is cute, quick, and queer--a trifecta of good qualities. It wasn't anything earth-shattering, but frankly, we need queer stories of all kinds, and this one is sweet, fun, and well-done. These characters face realistic challenges that many or all queer folks face, but there isn't any queer trauma porn, which I appreciate. They also have passions, struggles, and fears other than just being queer, like, ya know, full human beans. 👩‍❤️‍👩

"‘Miiilllllllliiiie,‘ he whines. ‘Why do you have to leave me? What‘s Scotland got that Texas doesn‘t? Other than discernible seasons, I guess.‘
‘All kinds of things,‘ I tell him. ‘Kilts.‘
‘I can wear a kilt.‘
‘Bagpipes.‘
‘I‘ll learn those.‘
‘Cool geology.‘
‘Texas has so many damn rocks, Mill.‘
‘It‘s different. And I‘m ready to be somewhere different for a little while.‘"
Thanks, Rachel Hawkins--now I want to leave Texas when travel isn‘t safe! ✈

I'm likely being too ambitious with my #june2020 #TBR, particularly given how difficult focus and motivation have been for me to find in recent days, but here we are. My library ebook hold on Her Royal Highness just came through today, so that's exciting! Into the Drowning Deep should arrive in a couple weeks, and the rest I either own, checked out from the library, or borrowed from @Eyelit (bless you, thank you! 💙). 📚

Eyelit Into the drowning deep is so good! You‘ve got a great selection for this month 😃 5y
thestarlesscasea @Eyelit ooh yeah? Yay! A booktuber I love recommended it, and we've got that ocean theme coming up next month, so here we are 🌊 5y

Lockdown reading day 3:

27th March, 2020

Her Royal Highness - Rachel Hawkins

Unremarkable story. Reminded me why I am wary of YA contemporary. Didn't hate it didn't like it, it was meh! I wudn't hv missed much if I hadn't read it.

A second tropey, kind of fun and cute book. The fact that it was an f/f romance almost made it a pick, but I found the resolution frustrating and confusing. (Why do people keep asking Millie why she left Flora? Flora threw her out!)

If you want a super quick read that is as cheesy and adorable as possible, I definitely recommend Her Royal Highness. I mean, who doesn‘t want to find love at a Scottish boarding school?

This is the second book in the royal series. Millie is an American who is very excited to go to school in Scotland. What she doesn't expect is getting paired to be roommates with Flora who is a princess. They don't get along at first but the more they get to know each other the more they start to like each other. They are both surprised when they find out they both have feeling for each other. I really hope there will be a book about Sebastian!

This was recommended to me as "something a bit like Red, White & Royal Blue" but all they had in common were royals and queer folks. At 50% the two mains had had maybe four interactions and they hated each other, and then suddenly they were all over one another. Chemistry? What chemistry? It was cute, I enjoyed it, but it had it's shortcomings.

ShyBookOwl Bummer! I can't stand the hate-each-other love-each-other trope. It's why I cringe at rom coms and why I'm literally afraid to pick up romance novels. 5y
okthislooksbad @ShyBookOwl I kinda like them if they're done right, but there's a difference between a slow burn and "gee whiz you're the worst oh no wait hi ily" within 25 pages. ?? 5y
ShyBookOwl @okthislooksbad Haha no kidding 5y

So many tropes I love in this sapphic royal romance: enemies to lovers, mean girl is secretly a softie, nerdy kid falls for popular kid, royal falls for a regular person. Not to mention seeing some of the places I just visited in Edinburgh (Holyrood, the Royal Mile, etc) mentioned was pretty cool. If you're looking for a YA f/f romance this is definitely a cute one and satisfied my royal romance itch since reading Red, White & Royal Blue.

Weird machinations to get a young Texan to Scotland and then to have her rooming with the princess ... of Scotland (there‘s no separate royal fam there, to bee clear). Enemies to girlfriends with a queen who obstructs but then drops weirdly out of sight just when you think there will be a confrontation. Very movie-able. Netflix? U got this? 3.5⭐️ plus a half star for being F/F and also having a stag. #romantsy #queer

I've been on a royal romance kick and loving it! This is the follow-up to the author's Prince Charming (formerly Royals), which I liked. This book, loved! Flora is the wild child rebel princess and in the closet (not by choice). Millie is her American bi roommate who is less than impressed with her royal snobbiness. This was super cute and adorable. There was much more character development than Book 1 and Flora's redemption arc was well done. ⬇️

silentrequiem The only reason I wouldn't give this 5 stars is because the ending was abrupt. Yeah, it was happy, but it didn't feel complete without seeing how Flora's and Millie's families (particularly Flora's) dealt with this. Given the little bit we know about Queen Clara, I really needed to see that. 6y
silentrequiem While this is a follow-up, it can be read as a standalone. 6y

My current eArc. I am a fan of Hawkins and liked the first book. And this is set in a Scottish boarding school/castle. So far, so good!
