A teen at boarding school grapples with life, love, and rugby in this unforgettable novel that is alternately hilarious and painful, awkward and enlightening (Publishers Weekly, starred review).Ryan Dean West is a fourteen-year-old junior at a boarding school for rich kids. Hes living in Opportunity Hall, the dorm for troublemakers, and rooming with the biggest bully on the rugby team. And hes madly in love with his best friend Annie, who thinks of him as a little boy. Ryan Dean manages to survive lifes complications with the help of his sense of humor, rugby buddies, and his penchant for doodling comics. But when the unthinkable happens, he has to figure out how to hold on to whats important, even when it feels like everything has fallen apart. Filled with hand-drawn infographics and illustrations and told in a pitch-perfect voice, this realistic depiction of a teens experience strikes an exceptional balance of hilarious and heartbreaking.

#Two4Tuesday

1. Nope

2. The tagged book is phenomenal and one of my favorite YA books ever. Yes it‘s about a rugby team at a private school but it also so much more with twists and turns and unexpected depths. It also has one of the greatest covers ever (something I randomly had a conversation with Dan Santat about at a book event 🤷‍♀️). Love it.

#Two4Tuesday

1. I don‘t watch a lot of sports but do try to go to at least one baseball game a year at Wrigley Field because it‘s a great place to spend a summer afternoon.

2. The tagged book (YA) about a high school junior named Ryan Dean West who is on the school‘s rugby team is fantastic. I also really enjoy C. S. Pacat‘s Fence, a comic about a high school fencing team that brings ALL the drama all the time. Really fun.

I purchased these for my classroom library three years ago. Besides the tagged book, I‘ve read the The Dogs, Rooms & The Dead House. Cool idea, @Lcsmcat #bookhaulchallenge

❤️❤️❤️💔 This book. I have no words.
😂🤣😉😊😠😭😢

BibliOphelia Andrew Smith is so good. 7y
tjwill @BibliOphelia I think so too! I had read Grasshopper Jungle, The Alex Crow, and 100 Sideways Miles, but had been putting off reading this one. I‘m not sure why. I loved it. 7y
BibliOphelia I love how he never panders or talks down to his YA audience. I need to get Winger! 7y
tjwill @BibliOphelia I agree. His characters are real. Winger is great and now I need the sequel! 7y

Mehso-so

Winger (protagonist) is very static. He begins the story with a "loser" status and a plan to change this. The book is anticlimactic and Winger undergoes no significant changes until the last pages when Joey comes up missing. I had to wait 400 pages for something to happen aside from fighting over girls. My unpopular opinion is that Winger is only okay. Nothing really special. However, I enjoyed the comics and realistic portrayal of a teenage boy.

@Liberty I'm a sucker for a boarding school book, and this one focuses on members of a rugby team at a boarding school. It is equal turns heartbreaking and hilarious. I loved the format that includes the narrator's sketches. #giveawaysports

For #BestFights I have to go with the multiple spats Ryan Dean finds himself involved in throughout the course of this book. #Novemberland

Not sure how to even rate this. I was enjoying the hell out of it. It was light and fun and hilarious. And now I feel like my heart has been ripped out of my chest. ☹️️ Anyone else feel completely unprepared for that ending?

My first Litsy book stack, compliments of Teacher Appreciation Day at Indigo. I can justify buying more books because I have a classroom library! Oh, who am I kidding.

#FunFridayPhoto While this book does have some truly heartbreaking parts, it is, for the most part, a funny book. Ryan Dean is easily one of my favorite characters.

This is my all time favorite book. It will make you laugh, cringe, feel awkward, laugh again, and then cry to the point where you will have no tears left. Laugh out loud funny and gut wrenching.
