The Well
The Well: A Novel | Catherine Chanter

Set in a modern-day Britain where water is running out everywhere except at the farm of one seemingly ordinary family whose mysterious good fortune leads to a shocking act of violence, The Well is extraordinary...a mesmerizing readcombining a gripping mystery, nuanced psychological drama, and striking prose (Publishers Weekly, starred review). When Ruth Ardingly and her family make that first long drive up from the city in their grime-encrusted car and view The Well, they are enchanted by a jewel of a farm that appears to offer everything they need: an opportunity for Ruth, an escape for her husband, and a home for their grandson. But when the drought begins, everything changes. Surrounded by thirty acres of lush greenery, the farm mysteriously thrives while the world outside crumbles under the longest dry spell in recorded history. No one, including the owners, understands why. But The Wells unique glory comes at a terrible price. From the envy of their neighbors to the mandates of the government, from the fanaticism of a religious order called the Sisters of the Rose to the everyday difficulties of staying close as husband and wife, grandmother and childall these forces lead to a shocking crime. Accusations of witchcraft, wrongdoing, and murder envelop the family until their paradise becomes a prison. A beautifully written debut novel that channels Margaret Atwood and Gillian Flynn, creating a story thats speculative and suspenseful (Minneapolis Star Tribune), The Well is an utterly haunting meditation on the fragile nature of our relationships with each other and the places we call home.

The quick office cleanup turned into organizing my books 😅 All the books I‘ve received in the past year have been randomly piled on a shelf so I finally re-organized my bookshelves to include them. It took some finagling but they‘re there (We‘re just going to ignore that some of them had to be placed out of order to fit.)

Mehso-so

I‘m going to say it, this was... under-well-ming! 🤦🏻‍♀️😂 Sorry! Couldn‘t help myself. This was alright and kept me mostly interested, but was a fairly basic whodunnit. I felt the author chose the easiest option in the end and the most interesting part- the drought- wasn‘t explored in a satisfying way. Some interesting concepts and some irredeemably flawed characters. A decent debut. (Image by Curepi on DeviantArt)

Dystopian books, bookmarks, art supplies, chocolate, matte lipstick and stuff for Gambit? These are a few of my favourite things 🎶 💜 @TheKidUpstairs this is amazing. I‘d never heard of The Well or The Blondes and I‘m so excited about that, and to finally get to read Ready Player One! The bookmarks are perfect AND THOSE WINSOR&NEWTON MARKERS! holy crap! #DystopianBlues

teebe @TheKidUpstairs PS I love the lipstick (and the notes!). The colour was really well-chosen— it exactly matches my shirt today 😂 I‘m definitely going to check out those other colours. Thank you for everything! (edited) 6y
Mommamanzi What an amazing package of goodies!!! 6y
TheKidUpstairs Yes! I'm so glad you like everything. I had a lot of fun putting it all together! I might have instagram stalked you too help pick the lip colour 😶 Happy Reading! 6y

Only went and left Oryx & Crake at work 🙄. So I‘ve started a new eBook instead. I was adamant I would wasn‘t going to get on board with eBooks, but they‘re just so darn convenient. I‘m a convert! We have a subscription to BorrowBox at my library and it‘s actually great. I fancied something psychological so going to give this a whirl.

CherryPie Love e-books. So much better for sore hands. Welcome onboard! 6y
JennAndrew @CherryPie yes, and weak wrists! I work in a library and loads of our older customers need large print but struggle with the weight of the huge books. E-books allow them to adjust the font as needed for a fraction of the weight. Win win! 6y

Half way through but still no talk of scientists on the land trying to find out why? Only 3 guards? Hmmm the world seems much more polite than what I would imagine. Maybe it's the point of view

Lynellaloo Omg I can't believe what just happened (chapter 33) 7y

#day22 #lyricalapril #earthsong I've had this on my TBR for a while (I think I heard about it from The Richard and Judy Bookclub in the UK)... it sounds intriguing... a terrible drought has hit modern-day Britain, except for one mysterious location... which leads to suspicions, chaos and violence. Blurb says it channels 'Margret Atwood and Gillian Flynn'! .... Anyone read this?

Bookladylinda Not me. 7y
