Elizabeth and Mary
Elizabeth and Mary: Cousins, Rivals, Queens | Jane Dunn
The political and religious conflicts between Queen Elizabeth I and the doomed Mary, Queen of Scots, have for centuries captured our imagination and inspired memorable dramas played out on stage, screen, and in opera. But few books have brought to life more vividly than Jane Dunns Elizabeth and Mary the exquisite texture of two womens rivalry, spurred on by the ambitions and machinations of the forceful men who surrounded them. The drama has terrific resonance even now as women continue to struggle in their bid for executive power. Against the backdrop of sixteenth-century England, Scotland, and France, Dunn paints portraits of a pair of protagonists whose formidable strengths were placed in relentless opposition. Protestant Elizabeth, the bastard daughter of Anne Boleyn, whose legitimacy had to be vouchsafed by legal means, glowed with executive ability and a visionary energy as bright as her red hair. Mary, the Catholic successor whom Englands rivals wished to see on the throne, was charming, feminine, and deeply persuasive. That two such women, queens in their own right, should have been contemporaries and neighbours sets in motion a joint biography of rare spark and page-turning power. From the Trade Paperback edition.

I have some catching up to do with what I've read lol! So I love historical fiction and I love Elizabeth I. So when I first picked this up I was super excited! Then I got a couple of chapters in and realized that it's not fiction at all. I really need to read the jackets more closely lol! Either way, I loved this book. It's a good coverage of their lives and what it was to be a female in power at that time in history.

Absolutely amazing book! As a history buff, I thoroughly enjoyed pretty much everything about this detailed and analytical account of the dramatic relationship between these two queens. So much thought and research went into this and it truly shows.

If you are an avid non fiction fan and love this period in history, you may love this book. I am interested in the history of Mary Queen of Scots, but found this book a bit tedious and slow. I discovered some intriguing facts, and learned more about the politics between England and Scotland, but it took Herculean effort for me to finish it. 3/5

I finished a book!!
This was a thorough and sympathetic portrait of both Elizabeth I and Mary, Queen of Scots. Dunn shows how their childhoods and adolesence shaped who they became as monarchs and how their fates as queens were intertwined. Sometimes repetitive but it also helped follow certain threads through their lives. I learned a ton!
Thanks for the recommendation @TrishB

TrishB Yay 🎉🎉 glad you enjoyed it. 6y

@RealLifeReading
These two had their moments 😀

Balibee146 looks good - stacking 😀 7y
JillR Do you recommend @TrishB ? I'm fancying some historical fiction but haven't read much beyond Philippa Gregory (😳)... maybe Sharon Penman once... 🤴🏻 7y
TrishB @JillR this one isn't fiction - though is a good read. Do you like any particular era? I'm not a PG fan personally, love Penman, Elizabeth Chadwick and Margaret George. If you let me know if you like any particular time I could probably think of a couple. 7y
