For the Sake of Elena
For the Sake of Elena | Elizabeth George
3 posts | 17 read | 4 to read
Elena Weaver was a surprise to anyone meeting her for the first time. In her clingy dresses and dangling earrings she exuded a sexuality at odds with the innocence projected by the unicorn posters on her walls. While her embittered mother fretted about her welfare from her home in London, in Cambridgewhere Elena was a student at St. Stephen's Collegeher father and his second wife each had their own very different image of the girl. As for Elena, she lived a life of casual and intense physical and emotional relationships, with scores to settle and goals to achieve--until someone, lying in wait along the route she ran every morning, bludgeoned her to death. Unwilling to turn the killing over to the local police, the university calls in New Scotland Yard. Thus, Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley and his partner, Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers, enter the rarefied world of Cambridge University, where academic gowns often hide murderous intentions. For both officers, the true identity of Elena Weaver proves elusive. Each relationship the girl left behind casts new light both on Elena and on those people who appeared to know her bestfrom an unsavory Swedish-born Shakespearean professor to the brooding head of the Deaf Students Union. What's more, Elena's father, a Cambridge professor under consideration for a prestigious post, is a man with his own dark secrets. While his past sins make him neurotically dedicated to Elena and blind to her blacker side, present demons drive him toward betrayal. From the Paperback edition.

Pickpick

A good installment in the Lynley and Havers mystery series. This one takes place at the University of Cambridge, where a deaf student is murdered while out on her morning run.

(1992) Fifth in George's mystery series featuring the upper-class detective Thomas Lynley and his working-class partner Barbara Havers. In this one, Lynley & Havers go to Cambridge to investigate the murder of a student, the daughter of a distinguished professor who turns out to be not as innocent as Daddy imagines. The mystery is pretty good, but as with others in the series, the mystery is secondary to the rich lives of George's characters.

AmandaBlaze Is this the same series that was also made Into a British TV series? (edited) 2y
swynn @AmandaBlaze Yes! The BBC's “Inspector Lynley“ series -- I haven't seen it yet, but have heard good things. 2y

#funphotofriday I have so many books,I'd say at least 1500 here at home, but these themed photos are showing me exactly where my collection is lacking, which is a good thing! The only book I could find set on campus is this oldie but goodie by Elizabeth George.Elena was a student at Cambridge where her fathers a professor until she's found dead on her running track. To some people she was sexy & provocative,to others an intelligent girl.A great read.

Liberty This is one of her best ones. 8y
Lizpixie @Liberty my view exactly, of the original Lynleys. Did you like her later ones, such as Careless In Red and Believing The Lie? 8y
[DELETED] 2232195534 I loved this one. Nice pick! I am so behind on my George books. They've gotten so lengthy! 8y
megt I can't wait to get to this one! I recently started the Lynley books and I'm looking forward to going through the wholes series. 8y
Lizpixie @kaysreadinglife @megt They're worth the time to enjoy them, she's fantastic. One of the few series that have kept the quality and even gotten better over time. 8y
