Ralph's Party
Ralph's Party | Lisa Jewell
7 posts | 9 read | 6 to read
Meet the residents of 31 Almanac Road ... Ralph and Smith are flatmates and best mates - until, that is, the gorgeous Jemima moves in. And suddenly they're bickering about a lot more than who drank the last beer. Of course, Jem knows that one of them is the man for her - but is it Ralph or Smith? Upstairs, Karl and Siobhan have been happily unmarried for fifteen years - until, that is, Cheri moves into the flat above theirs. Cheri's got her eye on Karl and doesn't see why she should let a little thing like his girlfriend stand in her way ... Sooner or later its all got to come to a head - and what better place for tears and laughter, break ups and make ups than Ralph's party?

Ralph‘s #Party was the book that introduced us to the prodigious writing talent that is Lisa Jewell in 1999, and she followed it up with a sequel in 2010.

It‘s not my favourite book by her, I think she has only blossomed & grown since but still a good book. If you haven‘t read anything by her it would be a good New Year‘s Resolution to do so. I especially recommend the books from 2009 onwards (The Truth About Melody Browne).

AnneCecilie I read Ralph‘s Party in the early 2000s and remember liking it. I had no idea that there was a sequel so I will definitely seek that one out. 2y

Mehso-so

A very lackluster 2.5 stars. This is the story about the residents of 31 Almanac Road. In the basement we have Ralph & Smith, long time friends who just brought Jemima in to live with them. On the ground floor there's long time couple Karl & Siobhan and upstairs is Cheri. They are either rather terrible people or not so bad compared to the others. The main problem here seems to be that they aren't very interesting characters, ⬇️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick ⬆️with or without their indiscretions & bad relationships. The drama was much too similar to the others. I wasn't really cheering for any of them, even in a "he's so bad this is hilarious" kind of way. The party happens toward the end of the book, setting up a sequel I'll pass on. This is an old book off my TBR pile, a star on my #bookspinbingo board, and my #bookspin book of the month. @TheAromaofBooks 4y
TheAromaofBooks Sounds like it's nice to get it off the list!! 4y

Time for a change of pace, and reading Lisa Jewell‘s first published book. Let‘s see how it al, started and if it is as good as the more recent books she has published.

rachaich I read this when it first came out! I'm not sure I've read any others but really liked this at the time. Hope it's aged well! 5y
LauraBeth @rachaich I read this when it came out too! I liked it as well at the time and also liked One Hit Wonder. Can‘t remember which one came first. I‘ve enjoyed getting to follow her career from the beginning. 5y
