When We Meet Again
When We Meet Again | Kristin Harmel
19 posts | 22 read | 22 to read
Emily thinks she s lost everything until a mysterious painting leads her to what she wants most in the world. The new novel from the author of international bestsellers "The Sweetness of Forgetting" and "The Life Intended" shows why her books are hailed as engaging ("People"), absorbing ("Kirkus Reviews") and enthralling (Fresh Fiction). Emily Emerson is used to being alone; her dad ran out on the family when she was a just a kid, her mom died when she was seventeen, and her beloved grandmother has just passed away as well. But when she s laid off from her reporting job, she finds herself completely at sea until the day she receives a beautiful, haunting painting of a young woman standing at the edge of a sugarcane field under a violet sky. That woman is recognizable as her grandmother and the painting arrived with no identification other than a handwritten note saying, He always loved her. Emily is hungry for roots and family, so she begins to dig. And as she does, she uncovers a fascinating era in American history. Her trail leads her to the POW internment camps of Florida, where German prisoners worked for American farmers...and sometimes fell in love with American women. But how does this all connect to the painting? The answer to that question will take Emily on a road that leads from the sweltering Everglades to Munich, Germany and back to the Atlanta art scene before she s done. Along the way, she finds herself tempted to tear down her carefully tended walls at last; she s seeing another side of her father, and a new angle on her painful family history. But she still has secrets, ones she s been keeping locked inside for years. Will this journey bring her the strength to confront them at last?"

I don't know why I do this to myself. I love some authors in the moment I find them. And then I read their earlier work and I'm like Geesh! I'm glad this wasn't my first Kristin Harmel book. While I was intrigued by the history and the story of German POWs in America. I just did not love the book. It felt like fiction. I mean I get that it is historical fiction but it just felt... Too good to be true. #catsy #catsoflitsy

Kristin Harmel never lets me down. I need a reliable author after that last dumpster fire. Bring on something worthwhile.

Another one of my challenges this year is to read one book from each author that I have 3 or more books on my TBR. If I keep adding their books to my list I need to start reading them. This one features a modern story of a woman who receives a painting of her grandma with a strange note and a WWII German soldier who is at a POW camp in the US. This one was emotional. Looking forward to her other books! 4⭐️ book 34

Tracyantoon I have lots of those authors with 3 or more books on my TBR. I need to get on that. Solid work!📚😀 4y

Very mixed feelings about this one. I was into the storyline despite my internal eye rolling. The issue I really had was the writing style. It was a bit too melodramatic and maudlin for my taste. Also, Emily, despite being a journalist, wasn‘t a great researcher and really had a hard time linking facts together. She was a bit dim to me. Still, I blew through this and it held my interest despite my issues with the overall book.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Oh this book!! I devoured it today and if I hadn't been at work, I would have been ugly crying at the end of it. Beautifully written, bringing the past to the present in such a way that you feel every emotion of the main character. Highly recommend!

Excited to start this today! I love books about family history and discovering one's genealogy! This sounds like a wonderful read. Anyone else read this? Thoughts?

Born.A.Reader @RadicalReader He does, but not nearly like I do. And he likes Sci-fi and fantasy, mostly. His current read is one of the Star Wars universe novels. 7y
RadicalReader @Born.A.Reader people sure love science fiction so enjoyable for people who find it entertaining and intriguing. Does he have a Litsy account too? 7y
Born.A.Reader @RadicalReader No he doesn't lol, he doesn't read enough for it he says. And I know! My favorite author is a fantasy writer, Piers Anthony. 7y
RadicalReader @Born.A.Reader very nice. Don't think somebody needs to read a lot to be able to enjoy Litsy those who like the content would appreciate the content more when it is spaced out or infrequent 7y
Born.A.Reader @RadicalReader I've mentioned it to him, but he says he'll live vicariously through mine lol 7y

I really liked this one, even though I was reaching for the tissues by the end of it! This was my first book by Harmel and I will definitely be reading more. I thought the historical thread of the story was really interesting, because I knew nothing about the German POW camps in the US. In the notes, the book Summer of My German Soldier is recommended as another look at this piece of history. Has anyone read that one?

Fans of historical fiction and family sagas will enjoy this book. It wasn't overly exciting, but I did enjoy the parallel storylines and the family story that spanned generations.
