The twelfth Inspector Rebus bestseller - a powerfully gripping novel where past and present collide...A student has gone missing in Edinburgh. She's not just any student, though, but the daughter of well-to-do and influential bankers. There's almost nothing to go on until DI John Rebus gets an unmistakable gut feeling that there's more to this than just another runaway spaced out on unaccustomed freedom. Two leads emerge: a carved wooden doll in a toy coffin, found in the student's home village, and an internet role-playing game. The ancient and the modern, brought together by uncomfortable circumstance...

Inspector Rebus investigates the disappearance of a young woman who was involved in a mysterious online game. I liked the complexity of the mystery and the multiple facets of the investigation that involved several of Rebus's colleagues.

kwmg40 @Librarybelle I agree with @Andrew65 that this is an excellent series and worth getting into, though I've only read about half the books in the series myself. 2y

hey guys, I'm Sarah ⚡️
i'm so happy that i heard about this app, i've been wanting to find a social media app devoted to books!
anyway, i'm reading two books right now:
1) 'Centralia' by Mike Dellosso
2) 'Zeroes' by Scott Westerfeld

and, i'm about to start another book, 'The Falls' by Ian Rankin. I've been wanting to find a good mystery/thriller book for a while, so hopefully this one fits the bill!

The BBC dramatisation is perfect for those looking to fill a couple hours time with an murder mystery audio. I really enjoyed the multiple narrators.

Another enjoyable Rebus book. I never know what to say about them except that I love visiting Edinburgh through these books. This time I noted John Knox's house and Canongate Kirk, which I saw on my trip to Edinburgh in 2013. 😃

I just giggled out loud like a lunatic at this music reference ?

(My favourites Undertones song is "She's a Runaround")

[Siobhan] broke the walk with breakfast at an early opener: beans on toast and a mug of tea so strong she feared for tannin poisoning.

(My favourite kind of tea first thing in the morning 😁)

Rebus took Clarke's tea through.

"Now that's class," she said, examining the tea-bag floating in the mug.

My favourite place to read is my parents' living room. This is where I like to FALL (har!) into a chair or onto a couch and get lost in a good book. My mum has most if not all of the Rebus novels, and The Falls is next on my list, so that is why I chose it for today's #augustofpages blurb.

SharonGoforth That looks comfy! 8y
rabbitprincess @SharonGoforth It is! The couch is even comfier. 8y

[DELETED] 2232195534 You know, I've not yet read a Rebus book. On my list...😀 8y
rabbitprincess @StellaDz It is a snazzy print! And yes Rebus is great. Always has me wanting to hop a plane to Edinburgh. 8y
rabbitprincess @kaysreadinglife Ian Rankin recently said on Twitter that Black and Blue is his first "good one", if you're not particular about reading in order ? 8y

Mehso-so

Can't believe this is my 12th Rebus. I can't bloody stand him. Rankin is the only writer I hate-read and Rebus is an annoying twerp. Always reasonably strong in plot, this was a particularly dreadful muddle of dated nonsense about the Interwebs with a splash of Burke and Hare thrown in. Ugh.

kammartinez Why do you hate-read the Rebus novels? I'm not saying you shouldn't, since I understand (and revel in) hate-reading sometimes, but what is it about these novels, specifically, that makes you want to hate-read them? 9y
GuiltyFeat I have a good friend who loves Rebus. We like a lot of the same things but on this we disagree. Years ago he paid a healthy sum to charity to become a named character in one of the books. I started the series from the beginning and I will keep going until I find my friend. So far, no joy. 9y
kammartinez Oof. I hope you find your friend soon then - and that their fate in whichever book they appear in is a pleasant one. 9y
GuiltyFeat @kammartinez Cheers. I'll let you know when he shows up. 9y

'Easier the second time,' he answered in a voice which, had it been any more of an undertone, would have leapt up and broken into the chorus of 'Teenage Kicks'.
