Every Hidden Thing
Every Hidden Thing | Kenneth Oppel
Somewhere in the Badlands, embedded deep in centuries-buried rock and sand, lies the skeleton of a massive dinosaur, larger than anything the late nineteenth-century world has ever seen. Some legends call it the Black Beauty, with its bones as black as ebony, but to seventeen-year-old Samuel Bolt, its the rex, the king dinosaur that could put him and his struggling, temperamental archaeologist father in the history books (and conveniently make his father forget hes been kicked out of school), if they can just quarry it out. But Samuel and his father arent the only ones after the rex. For Rachel Cartland this find could be her ticket to a different life, one where her loves of science and adventure arent just relegated to books and sitting rooms. And if she cant prove herself on this expedition with her professor father, the only adventures she may have to look forward to are marriage or spinsterhood. As their paths cross and the rivalry between their fathers becomes more intense, Samuel and Rachel are pushed closer together. Their flourishing romance is one that will never be allowed. And with both eyeing the same prize, its a romance that seems destined for failure. As their attraction deepens, danger looms on the other side of the hills, causing everyones secrets to come to light and forcing Samuel and Rachel to make a decision. Can they join forces to find their quarry, and with it a new life together, or will old enmities and prejudices keep them from both the rex and each other?

I really enjoyed this YA novel about a headstrong girl in the late 1800s who wants to be an archeologist, the competition to dig up “new” dinosaurs, and her first love. Have to say I didn‘t love the ending, seemed a bit forced, but still worth the read - interesting characters, even if they‘re a bit uneven at times. A sequel to come for sure.

Zögerlich schaut die Sonne durch die Wolken. Trotzdem stecke ich meine Lesernase tief hinein in das grandiose Abenteuer: neben alten Zeiten warten gewichtige Entdeckungen in diesem Buch. Dazu eine verbotene Liebe a la Romeo und Julia. Wie wird es nur enden dieses Lesehighlight? .... hoffentlich nie....

Amazing! It's was so interesting (and I'm sure a challenge) to read a newly published book about very archaic paleontologist practices. Intertwined with how love use to be just had be wrapped up. Not to mention...Kenneth Oppel ❤️ #litsyAtoZ #letterO #historicalfiction #yalit #teenlit #teenfiction #everyhiddenthing #kennethoppel #dinosaurs #1800s #paleontology #history #love

So I just found this book at #halfpricebooks and it sounded so interesting! I think it just shot up to the near top of my summer TBR! basically it's a teen Romeo and Juliet tale-of-two-households plus archaeology!! Sweet!! So who didn't see Jurassic Park as a kid and not want to dig up Dino bones? I know I did! So yeah, I can't wait to get into this one! 🤣

Kenneth Oppel is quickly becoming my favorite author. I love the palaeontology angle of Every Hidden Thing. Any book about dinosaurs will have me interested! I enjoyed the complicated relationships between Rachel and Samuel and their very flawed fathers. It was a lot of fun to read all the drama and intrigue. But I had a tough time buying into the romance. It has a few flaws, but is a really great book I can easily recommend.

Loved this story. So different from lots of YA historical fiction. No damsels in distress here. Enjoyed this so much more than The Boundless. Plus, it was my first eBook. I won a new Nook from Barnes & Nobel and this was my first purchase.

Finally finished a gosh darn book! And boy was this a good one: warring paleontologists, feminist heroine, forbidden romance, Native Americans sticking it to the white man, and some truly beautiful passages...loved it ❤️

Five YA books set in the wild west. All of these books are really fun. I especially loved Every Hidden Thing because I'm so intrigued by The Bone Wars.

This was such a cute story. I loved learning more about the expeditions required to find bones, the process in how they're named then the forbidden romance, the duelling scientists with a bitter rivalry. Such a good book!

Mehso-so

Ups and downs. Quick reading with a few eye rolls in some spots but some decent plotting elsewhere.
