So, a few students asked me to run a book club. I said yes, but wanted them to pick the book. They tried, then decided that I should pick. I picked this one - couldn‘t tell you what it was that made me suggest it. They agreed, and we‘re meeting to discuss on Thursday. And I don‘t like the book. And I probably won‘t finish reading in time. But I do like this quote, so at least I‘ll have one contribution for the discussion.

I simply devoured this book. I loved the way Sanchez included Spanish language in a way that did not leave a non-Spanish speaker feeling like she was missing something. The story was compelling, the writing was wonderful. Thoroughly enjoyed.

I am not usually a fantasy reader. However, on a recent trip to Ireland, I couldn‘t resist stopping at the young adult shelf in a little book shop in Lahinch. I thought since Ireland is such a magical place, I might pick up a book that includes ghosts and magic. I‘m about halfway through, it‘s a good story though I‘ll admit to struggling a little bit because this is not the type of reading I usually do. It is fun to try something new though!

So happy to finally have the time and brain space to get back to fun books. Got to hear the author speak on a panel at BTAFest last year! What a treat to finally be getting to read the story she was discussing. Loving Dimple and Rishi!

Finished reading The Belles this weekend. Took me a while to get into it as I had a hard time connecting with the characters. However, once a few key plot events were introduced, I couldn't put it down. The photo is a sample for an assignment I gave my students in place of a book report. They were to create a "bookscape" and submit that along with a short write-up of the significance of the pictured items.

Quick read so far. Interesting to hear how an artist develops. My yoga teacher plays MC Yogi's music in class very often. I've even used some of his songs in my 7th grade ELA class. Enjoying this memoir.

My current read. I know next to nothing about the case and the couple, so this is a great learning opportunity. Plus, I love Ms. Powell's work. What category does a "documentary novel" belong in? Fiction or nonfiction?

Smithkatiea Just finished. What a beautiful book! What a sweet couple! What a shame that so much of their time together was fraught with strife because of the shallow, narrow-minded opinions of others who had no business weighing in with their two cents in the first place. (edited) 7y

What an interesting read. I'll admit to flipping to the end of the novel just to see what chapter it ends with. You see, it starts with chapter 18 and works it's way back to 1. (Ends on 19. Phew!)

This book is so cute, clever, and funny. As entertaining for me as for my five year old. It's the story of why we play the game we now know as Rock, Paper, Scissors.

Reading outside today - while I still can before the weather gets too cold for such activities. Loving Saints and Misfits, so far. Had the distinct pleasure of meeting and speaking with the author at BTAF earlier this fall. She was lovely and I'm so grateful for this excellent #windowbook.

Seems I got my hands on this one before it was officially supposed to be available! As with everything Mr. Reynolds writes, I really appreciate all the book had to teach. I have a bunch of students eager to read this, so That's exciting. Going to try to listen to the audio version, too. Narration done by the author! 📚

I always love Kwame Alexander's work. This one didn't have the same levity that Booked and The Crossover had, and I wasn't able to attach myself to the characters the way I usually do in his work. Great story, though.

EchoLogical Blade was kind of annoying and dramatic but I chalked it up to fame and teen angst. Lol. I liked it overall. I think the soundtrack won me over. 7y

A little light reading for this dreary spring evening. We're hoping this will be the summer reading assignment for our seventh graders. Pending a full reading and administrative approval.

Smithkatiea Not going to be our summer reading book. The bit about the autopsy made it too gruesome for required reading. I'll definitely finish it and am enjoying the local connection, but it's back to the drawing board for picking a whole grade nonfiction text. 8y

What an amazing story. Absolutely loved these characters! My judge of a good writer is one who makes the reader feel as deeply for the characters (protagonists and antagonists alike) as they would for a real person. Ms. Zoboi has surely done that.

Getting some reading done while I'm on corridor duty at work today. What a book! Reading this for #readharder.

Smithkatiea I teach, and a part of my non-teaching duties includes walking the halls a couple of periods a week. I usually read while I walk and watch for mischief out of the corner of my eye. 8y
EchoLogical What'd you think? 8y
Smithkatiea @EchoLogical, I have to be honest, life started to get in the way and I haven't been able to finish it yet. I appreciate it, so far (a little over half way through) for offering the story from two such contrasting perspectives. Reading it to increase my exposure to LGBTQ lit and authors, but at this point in the text, that part of the story is only beginning to surface. I'll let you know when I finish it. Have you read it? Your thoughts? 8y
EchoLogical @Smithkatiea For some reason I didn't get a notification for your reply so I'm super late. I read it a few years ago so my initial reaction is kinda foggy. I do remember thinking that it was only so-so but no clue why I thought that. 8y

So, what do you think? Does this work for a book about technology for the #readharder challenge? I'm reading the young reader version because I teach children and like to have a broad range of titles and topics to suggest. Although I am very curious to compare the adult version. While this is a very interesting topic, the writing at this point (I'm about 1/3 through) seems distant and impersonal; I'm not making connections with the subjects.

Reading this book for task 5 on the #readharder challenge. Coming to the text with very little background on the Cuban Revolution or what it means to be an immigrant, so I'm hoping to learn much from this novel.

Reading this for the #readharder challenge. Way outside of my usual genre preferences. It's hard to keep track of the characters with all the jumping back and forth through time. Plus I'm mostly listening to the audio, and the names all sound very much the same to my untrained ear. But overall the story is interesting.

Reread this one this week. I saw there was another in the series I hadn't read, so I figured I'd refresh my memory before reading that one. As you can see, this copy has been read so many times that it needed some repairs. It's from my classroom library. I remember LOVING this when I read it originally. This time I liked it, but I think I liked it better the first time through.

Just finished listening to this one in the car and reading at home. Something about it didn't click for me. Not sure what, though. I love the premise. I just couldn't get into the story the way I do with most texts. It occurred to me as I read the end that perhaps what I found lacking were vivid descriptions. I couldn't really picture what was going on. I could understand but couldn't envision.

Reading for a professional book discussion group at work. 100 pages in and I still feel like the author is trying to convince me that she's right. I was hopeful for more specific information about how to develop the Growth Mindset in myself, my children, and my students. Maybe the remainder of the book will have more to offer.

EchoLogical Totally agree with this! I gave up after awhile because there were a bunch of anecdotes and no real information. I keep thinking I should have kept reading but it really felt like a chore. 8y
