I was already familiar with much of the information about Marie & Pierre Curie in Radioactive thanks to Sam Kean's excellent The Bastard Brigade. However, there was definitely info new to me & the artwork is incredible. A worthwhile graphic memoir about a remarkable & complex couple & their fascinating scientific circle.
This graphic novel is an idiosyncratic take on Pierre and Marie Curie‘s relationship and work, with haunting, evocative illustrations, and interesting digressions. Highly recommended! And isn‘t #GiorgioCat adorable? #CatsofLitsy (Our kitties now have their own Instagram account! Follow their antics there at Lexie.Giorgio.and.the.five)
I just stumbled across this graphic memoir while browsing at the library. The bright #yellow cover isn't the only thing about it that caught my attention. In addition to being intrigued by blurbs from Malcolm Gladwell & Nicole Krauss, I was also interested in the imaginative take on the subjects. #GratefulHarvest @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks
I really enjoyed this book and thought it was beautiful. Very unique. Redniss sketches out a brief biography of Marie Curie‘s life interspersed with examples of how the work of Curie and her family influenced the larger world, from x-rays to the Manhattan project to Chernobyl. It has illustrations throughout. This won‘t be for everyone. If you aren‘t into non traditional books/art or want a very in depth biography of Curie you might hate this.
ILLs come from many corners. Thanks to all libraries that lend. An instant five-star rating from me—beautiful book.
Marie Curie won a Nobel Prize for discovering radium and polonium. She coined the term “radioactivity.” She died in the summer of prolonged exposure to radiation from her work.
📒 Bonus! The cover glows in the dark!
🌸 Taken in front of my cousin‘s lilacs.

#PrinceOfJuly Day 21: “There is no connection between my scientific work and the facts of private life.” Marie Curie became known for this quote whereby she demanded a separation between what goes on in her private affairs & her scientific discoveries, which for a time, were put into question, as she was deemed amoral, her entire credibility and character perceived as too #Scandalous for comfort. This illustrated book uses a variety of styles and mediums, including photographs, to tell the tragic story of Marie Curie. Great read and beautiful. #backtoreading #womeninscience @JoeStalksBeck @Tiffy_Reads
I have waited a long time to get this beautiful book at my library. Some books just need to be held and not sideloaded into an ereader.
Congratulations to Lauren Redniss for being awarded the MacArthur Genius grant.
There was something magical about this book for me...the way in which the text and images really needed each other to tell the story was powerful. It's history and a work of art combined with a love story, science, and language...
With apologies to Marie Curie, who said, "There is no connection between my scientific work and the facts of private life."
