Honestly, not great. Writing was meh. I mostly finished it because I own it and because it‘s set in the area I‘m staying. #sandiegosummer

How have I not heard more about this author? And how can it be that I am just now reading one of his books? This one is my first by Don Winslow, but it definitely won't be my last. So good. Great characters, great action, just great story telling.
Beating the heat - like the book says, the end of workday beer is one of the best beers there is!
Almost done with my annual summer re-read of this. It really is one of the most perfect books I've read - confident, with great prose and characters who feel like ohana. It also reminds me that I need to go to the pool! 😂
Spending my #4thofJuly with one of the US of A's finest literary "inventions," the detective novel. Although, like all our great inventions, it has been built on and enhanced by people around the world, from all walks of life. We are truly better together. Also pictured: sleeping dog!
Don Winslow kept me company while I made carbonara for dinner tonight. Ray Porter captures the dry, snarky sense of humor perfectly with his narrations and I love how much detail and backstory Winslow provides on his characters.
When doing my last post for #favevillain for #somethingforsept , I remembered this great quote about villainy and how the most insidious forms work!
#AugustPhotoChallenge for Day 4! Don Winslow writes really dark novels about the drug trade, but he also writes some of the best #bookishsquad books ever! The Dawn Patrol is a perfect "hang out" detective novel, with an eclectic and fun group of characters you'll hate to leave! The other two novels have similar vibes - I love Bobby Z, with one of my favorite lines ever: "I have a problem with impulse control!" Check 'em out!
I saw the movie THE NICE GUYS yesterday and loved it. If you're a crime fiction fan at all, you will dig this (and I'll be picking up the tie-in book). It reminded me a lot of the chill, laid-back vibe of Don Winslow - a great summer author and worth checking out.
