"Powerfully raw, deeply moving, and utterly authentic. Rachel Lloyd has turned a personal atrocity into triumph and is nothing less than a true hero. . . . Never again will you look at young girls on the street as one of 'those' womenyou will only see little girls that are girls just like us." Demi Moore, actress and activist With the power and verity of First They Killed My Father and A Long Way Gone, Rachel Lloyds riveting survivor story is the true tale of her hard-won escape from the commercial sex industry and her bold founding of GEMS, New York Citys Girls Education and Mentoring Service, to help countless other young girls escape "the life." This is not an easy book to read. But it is very well written and has a lot to say about recovery from commercial sexual exploitation. I cried a lot reading it, but I‘m glad it got put on my radar. If you like nonfiction and can handle the subject matter, I highly recommend it.

This book is excellent but heartbreaking. I‘m reading it for RL bookclub. It‘s by a formerly sexually exploited woman, about the exploitation of children right here in America. It‘s eye opening and every page hurts to read. After a few chapters I have to set it aside and reach for some fiction.
(Froedrick snuggles help though)

Froedrick making himself known as I sit reading this morning. All I could see was his little paw reaching over my knees to grab the corner of my book 😸.

What a powerful book. This is a part memoir/part educational book on the commercial sexual exploitation of youth. I had to set it aside a few times but it is worth the read!

I am participating in Dressember again this year. I wear a dress every day in the month of December to raise awareness and money to fight against human trafficking. In addition to wearing dresses I am committing to reading these books on trafficking and exploitation. I have started Girls Like Us and it is so painful to read. A few chapters at a time is all I can handle. Reading difficult books is important to me though so I won't quit!

hwestfall If anyone is interested here is my fundraising page or you can check out Dressember to see if it would be something you would like to participate in next year. https://dressember-2018.funraise.org/fundraiser/heather-westfall 6y

It‘s insightful , brutally honest , horrific , raw downright intense It will make you angry , heartbroken and definitely change the way you look at things , for me it was also a bit of healing from being in a relationship that thrived on abuse as I was under age naïve and came from a broken home these girls had courage enough to stand up why can‘t we why can there be changes made to save girls from “the life” ?MUST READ ?warning graphic

#GirlInTheTitle This was another free library book sale pick up and it's just another amazing looking book I look forward to getting to.

CarrieBeckort A very emotional book. And it's human trafficking awareness month, so it's a good time to read it. 8y

Human and sex trafficking is often thought of as a global issue, and while it is, many neglect to realize that it happens at home. It does, and it disproportionately affects women and children of color. Here are some books that shed light on what goes on under our noses in the United States and Canada. Check my feed for another post of nonfiction recs and one of fiction recs on trafficking.

B.Reader Excellent reading list on a huge issue. I work in child welfare and live in a huge rodeo state, and have since learned that rodeo events are also a huge venue for human trafficking. Truly a topic deserving more attention! 8y
readordierachel Is there one of these in particular you would recommend reading first? 8y

TheWordJar Thanks for sharing this list. I'm woefully undereducated on the topic, and unfortunatey, until recently I also thought it was more of a global issue. I had no idea the prevalence in America. 8y
DeeLew Thanks for the recommendations! 💜 8y
