In his final novel, Aldous Huxley transports us to the remote Pacific island of Pala, where an ideal society has flourished for 120 years.
Inevitably, this island of bliss attracts the envy and enmity of the surrounding world. A conspiracy is underway to take over Pala, and events are set in motion when an agent of the conspirators, a newspaperman named Faranby, is shipwrecked there.

I have somehow never read this! Took a trip to the library today and picked up way too many books... Looking forward to lots of reading this year!
I have been cycling through audiobooks and nothing has been sticking for the past week or so. But I‘m enjoying Island so far as I work on these favors for my sister‘s baby shower with the windows wiiiide open.
bailedLet me be clear: since a long, dreadful reading slump in 2013-4 I pride myself on making it through every owned book I start even when I dislike it, so when I say I don‘t bail on books— I mean it.
And yet.... with this one I just can‘t. It was so hard for me to get my footing and there‘s too much dialogue... a few hours in to the audio it just seems like a old-fashioned masturbatory fantasy. Maybe I‘ll try again at another time.

There's been a lot of talk about Brave New World lately but not enough about this other gem by Aldous Huxley.
Buy this book! I love it, it's on sale (got the bookbub report today), and I just encountered another litten who likes it, @dystopianaut !

Especially during this election season, I long for this fictional, unspoiled, non-capitalistic society based on love and acceptance of nature, human and otherwise. Huxley's Pala is my dream. This seems to be one of his lesser known novels, so if you haven't already, you should check it out. I folded so many pages because they held mind-opening philosophical ideas. #wishicouldbethere #booktober
