Flapper Pie and a Blue Prairie Sky
Flapper Pie and a Blue Prairie Sky: A Modern Day Baker's Guide to Old-Fashioned Desserts | Karlynn Johnston
7 posts | 1 read | 10 to read
Old-fashioned favorites are paired alongside modern reimaginings in this nostalgic debut baking book from Karlynn Johnston of The Kitchen Magpie. Suitable for bakers of all skill levels and featuring over 125 delicious recipes, Flapper Pie and a Blue Prairie Sky is destined to become a much-loved addition to any family kitchen. This timeless collection of sweet treats combines long-forgotten classics with deliciously revamped recipes. Learn how to bake time-honored desserts like Saskatoon Berry Pie, Grandma Marion's Honey Cookies, and No-Bowl Chocolate Vinegar Cake -- then, jazz things up with their modern twists: White Chocolate Saskatoon Galette, a Stuffed Skillet Cookie, and Root Beer Float Cupcakes. And, of course, there's the recipe that started it all: the (almost) lost prairie favorite, Flapper Pie. When Karlynn first posted this recipe on her blog, The Kitchen Magpie, it went viral, drawing enthusiastic and sentimental responses from people reminiscing about their childhood and family food memories. An approachable book for all skill levels, Flapper Pie and a Blue Prairie Sky covers everything you need to know about being a modern-day old-fashioned baker: how to set up your kitchen and stock your pantry, and tips for handling tricky techniques like making pie dough and releasing a cake from the pan. The recipes cover everything from cakes to candies, doughnuts to dainties, and pies to puddings, with the same gorgeous photography that has made The Kitchen Magpie a go-to blog for passionate home bakers. As Karlynn writes in the introduction, "I was raised with the knowledge that food is love, family, tradition and the focal point of any occasion." This book is a delicious demonstration of Karlynn's wisdom -- an instant classic to be shared through the generations.

I'm going to ignore the heavy snow falling while I think about olives, blue sky and the south of France. Chocolate-dipped Coconut Macaroons (from tagged cookbook) topped with Candied Kalamata Olives (from Tal Ronnen's Crossroads.) A winning combination!

Prairiegirl_reading Such a great cookbook!! Your twist sounds interesting! 8y
Lindy @Prairiegirl_reading Yes: salty and sweet. 👍 8y
Lindy And I just remembered that Karlynn is a #localauthor @RealLifeReading 8y

RealLifeReading Ok I'm intrigued by coconut macaroons and olives!! 8y
Lindy @RealLifeReading The candied olives are a great conversation starter all on their own. I made the macaroons for tonight's book club, but I've just had one with a cup of tea. They're addictive! 8y
Mitch They look amazing - and I‘m intrigued by the olives 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 5y
Lindy @Mitch I candied kalamatas but I found a recipe online for candied Castelvetrano olives. https://food52.com/recipes/9441-candied-olives. The recipe I used was in 5y
Mitch @Lindy thanks - going to check that out 👍🏼 5y

Haven't had any time for reading today because I made two flapper pies from this wonderful cookbook. My grandma used to make this custard pie and it's one of my dad's favourites so he asked me to make this for our Easter dinner tonight. I hope it tastes as good as grandma's!!

Prairiegirl_reading P.s. The sky is not blue here on the prairies today!! 8y

Pickpick

Desserts from the mid-20th century, updated. For example, there's a homemade substitute for the petroleum-based whipped topping that was so popular then.
Signature ingredients: saskatoon berries (yay!); chocolate; brown sugar; and salted butter (Johnston didn't have to convince me - I ate it by the spoonful as a kid ) which is the easiest way to get salt evenly distributed in some recipes. Photos feature author's vintage Pyrex.

Oftencantdecide Petroleum- based whipped topping? 😳 8y
Lindy @Oftencantdecide Products like Cool Whip and Dream Whip. Yuck. 8y
Prairiegirl_reading Everything I have made from this book has been absolutely delicious! It reminded so much of my grandmothers that I was near tears when I first looked at it. My dad has been bugging to make flapper pie for him ever since. Waiting for Father's Day.... 8y

Lindy @Prairiegirl_reading So far, I've made the Lemon Sour Cream Pie, the matrimonial squares, and the Sour Cream Fudge Nuts. All good. 😋 8y
Dragon My mom used to make fabulous matrimonial cake ! Adding it to my tbr 👍 8y
Lindy @Dragon It's at the public library in Victoria; plenty of prairie people have moved there. 😀 8y
Dragon Thanks @Lindy I should check it out 😀🐉 8y
ValerieAndBooks I'm glad to know there's a homemade substitute for cool-whip! I'll have to check this out!! 8y

Tried another recipe and it's winner. Can't go wrong with date squares, really. I grew up calling them matrimonial squares, as does the author of this cookbook. What about in other parts of the world? Do they have other names?
#CanadianAuthors

LeahBergen We always called them Matrimonial Squares, too. ❤ 8y
LeahBergen And I love your plate! 8y
Lindy @LeahBergen Thanks! One of my sisters found those vintage dishes and she knew I'd love them. 8y

rubyslippersreads With that title, I'm kinda disappointed this isn't a novel. 😄 8y
Lindy @rubyslippersreads Not a novel, but that doesn't prevent it from being the June pick for one of my book clubs. We will eat even better than usual at that meeting. 😋 8y
lynneamch My gram from Cornwall (lived in UP of Michigan) called them matrimonial cake. Love 'em! 8y
Lindy @lynneamch Cake? That rings a bell. I had forgotten that I've occasionally heard this called matrimonial cake. When I was younger, I thought that was just another way to refer to wedding cake, before discovering it was date squares aka matrimonial squares. 8y
geodynamical_nonfiction Never heard of this matrimonial cake square before. Looks like a Fig Newton though. 8y
Lindy @geodynamical A bit like a fig Newton, except with a buttery crumb crust. And dates instead of figs. 8y

Classic Lemon Sour Cream Pie. All it needs is the whipped cream on top, but that will wait until just before serving and I probably won't remember to take a photo then. Treat for tonight's book club meeting. 😊

Sace Looks yummy! 8y

LeahBergen Yum. I was looking through this cookbook AGAIN on the weekend. I love all of the old Pyrex photos and so many recipes look like keepers. Good old prairie baking! I give up. I'm just going to have to buy it! 8y
sprainedbrain Looks yummy! 8y
Lindy @LeahBergen I will let you know the verdict on this particular pie after book club tonight. (We're discussing Pilgrimage.) Our group will actually be discussing this cookbook, but not until June. I plan to try a few more recipes before then. 8y
LeahBergen @Lindy Is the author of Pilgrimage Skyping in to your meeting?? 8y
Lindy @LeahBergen She was here in person. It was wonderful to hear her talk about the background to this historical novel. And she enjoyed the pie! We all did. 8y
LeahBergen @Lindy That's great!! 👏🏻 8y
