This book divides people, and I fully get it. Written from the point of view of Christians, Muslims and Jews, and two versions, male and female. I read the female version. I've finished reading this book on Sunday and it‘s so unusual that I occasionally forgot about the story, but today is the day for reread ... time to catch some dreams, because the devil is hidden in details 😬

Simona @BarbaraBB I hear you! Year ago I wouldn‘t like it too, but now I found it interesting and I see something captivating in folklore/religious parables, and from my experience - this book it‘s more about playing with the perception of reading, than it‘s about the story itself... 6y

Simona @BarbaraBB Yes, at the end is author‘s explanation why end where is difference. It‘s one paragraph (12 lines) of inner thoughts about the same event (last chapter which is in form of letters) from male and female perspective. The only difference is in the prose - female version is written in more subtle, lyrical language with an emphasis on inner feelings. Nothing crucial for the story. 6y

Simona @BarbaraBB I was wrong saying ‘nothing crucial for the story‘. I was thinking about that for last two hours, and for story as a pure story isn‘t crucial, but if I think about this paragraph from the perspective of the reading experience, well then - that is a very different ending. The story has exactly the same ending, but the difference is in what emotional tones you end up with the reading. Brilliant and yes, quite interesting 😘 6y

Lindy I don‘t want to go outside either. It‘s below freezing and heavy snow fell overnight. The only good thing is the concrete was warm enough to melt it, so we don‘t need to shovel a pathway. 6y

Simona @EadieB You can choose how you are going to read the story. You can read it in traditional style from first to last page, but author‘s advise is that you read it as you would be reading a dictionary - be lead by entries. The story is told in the form of a dictionary and interconnected entries ... and I decided to follow the references from one entry to another. When you will see the book you will know what I mean, but I hope that my ... 👇 6y

My grandfather came to America in 1914 from Croatia. I went to Croatia in 2010 and found where my family lived. It was a little village named Nin near Zadar. 6y

Simona I wasn‘t in Zadar yet, but Croatian coastline is very charming, beautiful and rich with islands. I‘m sure it was very emotional experience. @EadieB 6y

EadieB @Simona Yes it was! Croatia is a very beautiful country along the coast. I went from Zagreb to Dubrovnik and found the people, food, wine and olive oil wonderful! I went to 2 islands; Pag and Havar which was very nice! (edited) 6y

Simona The Old City of Dubrovnik is magical! They say for the Pag that is island of Slovenian‘s, because so many Slovenians goes there on vacation... and about olive oil - I use only olive oil at home. My coworker is from Brač island, and whenever he is going there, he brings me a few liters. Not too bitter and very aromatic 🤤😋 @EadieB 6y

EadieB @Simona Pag Island is known as the Party Island especially for the young. They have a cheese factory there and the cheese is the best. I went thru a bit of Slovenia on my way to Istria from Venice. The border guards were wondering why our passports were not stamped with entry into Italy. Our driver handled the problem and they let us pass through. Little scary through because of their machine guns! Croatian wines are the best but hard to get in US (edited) 6y

There's Male and Female editions--unique--the only difference between the two is 17 crucial lines, which is intriguing. 7th to 9th-Century Transylvania. Three unruly wise men. A really strange book about the ancient Khazars, who had to choose between religions. This book tells their story dictionary-like from the point of view of the Christians, the Muslims and the Jews. Some entries have the same topics but a different point of view. The author invites the reader to read crisscross through the entries.
This reading sections diagonally gave me an opportunity to skip through the book rather quickly. #1001books

Looks like I have a type here.

Milorad Pavić is one of my favorite authors on the planet. Khazars is not my favorite of his; Landscape Painted with Tea is, but the French-language cover is butt ugly. I recommend all of his books. All of them.

I've always been a sucker for dictionaries and encyclopaedias. I bought this book on the day I got fired from work. I went to the bookshop in London and I was absorbed so much by the book and I forgot I've been fired. It's a tale told from different perspectives – the Jews, the Christians, Muslims. It's a fantasy story and it's again reallytransporting. It takes you into another world. I loved it
