A Pocket for Corduroy
A Pocket for Corduroy | Don Freeman
5 posts | 29 read | 1 to read
This irresistible childhood classic is a delightful sequel to the original, well-loved tale Corduroy. This charming story takes readers into a multi-ethnic, urban neighborhood Laundromat, where Lisa's mother warns her to take everything out of her pockets before washing. Pockets! Corduroy doesn't have any pockets! The furry bear's search for a pocket of his own takes him on an adventure filled with the sights, sounds, smells and hazards of the Laundromat. As a result, Lisa and her beloved bear become separated as Corduroy ends up locked inside the Laundromat all night. And what do bears do all night in places like this? They ski in the soap flakes and nap in the baskets, of course! Fortunately, Lisa returns early the next morning to reclaim her tired little friend. Soon, Lisa is sewing Corduroy a pocket of his very own and again all is well in the life of Corduroy. "This merry tale gets added interest from...the setting, a multi-ethnic urban neighborhood, of cuddly Corduroy and his pal Lisa, a black child, and her attractive mother." Publishers Weekly.

How have I gone my entire life not realizing the family in the corduroy books was Black. The world has always needed more POC recognition in children‘s books, but maybe in my younger days I didn‘t pay attention the way I do now. I love the corduroy books. I may not be POC, but as a navy brat, I would have loved to see the places I lived and people I made friends with more represented.

TheBookHippie I love this 🤍I have all the corduroy books. It never even dawned on me ... 3y
LibrarianRyan @TheBookHippie I know right. If I wasn‘t reading an original copy from the library I might have thought it was changed later in life. Viola Davis wrote a new Corduroy book for the 50th anniversary. I thought it was weird at first but it makes so much sense now. I have it o. Hold. 3y
TheBookHippie @LibrarianRyan now I need to dig them out and look at them again ! 3y

ravenlee I kind of love that it wasn‘t something noticeable - it was an organic part of the story, rather than anything that called attention to itself. 3y
LibrarianRyan @ravenlee I agree. We need that normalized in children's books for all races. It was just a shock that I didn't remember it 3y
Elizabeth2 Oh my goodness, did my children love Corduroy! We read these book over and over again. We have a hardback of Corduroy and Other Stories that I have saved so I can read them to my grandchildren someday (should I be blessed with any). That book includes Flash the Dash and Dandelion, the Dandy Lion, too. It‘s a family favorite! (edited) 3y

“Corduroy” is a classic! I‘ve grown up reading this F, easy-to-read book series and it is absolutely terrific! This book is about Corduroy gaining a pocket for his overalls and the obstacles he had to go through to get it. All the books are a definite must read, check them out! This book is great for a RA. https://donfreeman.info/ #UCFLAE3414SP20 UDL 9.1 - Promote expectations and beliefs that optimize motivation

DrSpalding All books in the Corduroy series are good ones to read aloud. You need to expand on your classroom application related to the excellent website resources you‘ve included. 4y

A Pocket for Corduroy is a fantasy picture book I will use for a dramatic reenactment. This story is all about Corduroy and his search for a pocket to sew onto his overalls. Corduroy wonders off and gets trapped inside the laundry mat over night. Will Corduroy get out of the laundry mat? Will he ever get his pocket?

ChristinB I will use UDL 6.2 support planning and strategy development for the dramtic reenactment. I will also use ESOL strategy 2 and promote cooperation. The website https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgvFZy4sloo is a link to a read aloud of a Pocket for Corduroy. I will use this link to send home with students so they too can listen along and really get to know the story before they take an AR test on it. #UCFLAE3414F17 6y
laurie_jayy Did he ever get out? Did he ever get his pocket?? I totally love the suspense. I remember reading this book growing up. I love links that link to a read aloud because students can listen to this on their own also if they understand this voice better than the teachers (though we all hope our students understand and love us). 6y

Back in the good old days, the hubs caught the kids and me all reading. Tyler has A Pocket for Corduroy, I think Bethany is reading The Wizard of Oz, and I have no idea what I'm looking at. Happy times. 🙂
