Wonder. R.J. Palacio | R J Palacio

Wonder by R.J. Palacio is a realistic fiction novel I will use for a read aloud in my classroom. This is an uplifting story about Auggie Pullman and his new journey of starting school in the fifth grade. I had the chance to see this movie in theaters and there were some changes. They left out Summer‘s part as I was truly looking forward to her story. They left out the part of Julian turning the whole school against Jack Will.

ChristinB They got the part about comparing Auggie going to school to being a lamb at a slaughter house dead on. They also left out the part about Summer going to the Halloween party, and they too try to make her not be friends with Auggie. Lastly the movie did a TERRIFIC job with Julians mom, I thought the movie might make her a little nicer but nope she was even worse! 6y
ChristinB I cannot wait to use this in my future classroom as it has easily became one of my favorite books. I will utlize UDL 1.2 offer alternatives for auditory information, and ESOL strategy 8 using direct instruction for modeling, explaining, and scaffolding. laurie_jayy Hey Christin! I didn‘t not see the movie but I totally will be seeing it soon. How did they leave out summers part and try to make her not friend with Auggie? That never happened but of course the movie always has to change something. I think it‘s grate that your link links to an audio version of the book because some students will not be able to read in English :) 6y
MeghanW I was also a little upset they left out those parts from the movie, but overall I think they followed the book very well! I think your strategies are great for a RA in a classroom. 6y
AJones I also caught several inconsistencies between the book and the movie. Mrs. Albans should be ashamed of her behavior. She should be setting an example for her son, but instead she makes hurtful remarks about Auggie‘s craniofacial condition. Shame on her. Great post! And a must read! 💖📚 #ucflae3414f17 #WONDER 6y

Raven a Trickster Tale is a Caldecott Award winner traditional picture book I will use for guided reading. This is a story about a Raven who turns into a little boy when the whole entire world goes dark. The raven becomes a boy to find the sun again. I will use UDL 7.2 optimize relevance, value, and authenticity. I will also use ESOL 6 monitor students comprehension.

Sharks by Gina Cline and Joi Washington is a nonfiction picture book I will use for readers theater. This book compares and contrasts sharks to each other as it doesn‘t specifically name the scientific names of each shark it still gives an idea of how not all sharks are the same, and that sharks aren‘t scary animals.

ChristinB I will utilize UDL 8.3 Foster collaboration and community. As well as ESOL strategy 9 note taking strategies as I will create a t chart for the information from the book. It Never, Ever Snows in Florida by Amy Sweezey is a science fiction picture book I will use for a read aloud in my classroom. This is a story about AJ and how he wants nothing more than to build a snowman but he lives and Florida and believes that it never snows in Florida. How ever has it ever snowed in Florida? This will be perfect to use before a lesson about climate especially focusing on Flordia‘s climate.

All the students could make text-to-self connections about it snowing in Florida, and you could even ask the students who all has been in snow and have them give their personal accounts of the climate and weather difference here in Florida to where they were in snow. 6y

Independence Cake by Deborah Hopkinson is a historical fiction picture book I will use for guided reading as the story is lengthy and tricky. This is a story based off of a true story about a little girl who is making a cake for her president to come and eat with her.

A Pocket for Corduroy is a fantasy picture book I will use for a dramatic reenactment. This story is all about Corduroy and his search for a pocket to sew onto his overalls. Corduroy wonders off and gets trapped inside the laundry mat over night. Will Corduroy get out of the laundry mat? Will he ever get his pocket?

ChristinB I will use UDL 6.2 support planning and strategy development for the dramtic reenactment. I will also use ESOL strategy 2 and promote cooperation. I love links that link to a read aloud because students can listen to this on their own also if they understand this voice better than the teachers (though we all hope our students understand and love us). 6y

A Siamese cat causes havoc in his household as he is the only boy of the family. Skippyjon goes into his closet and is off into another world, this time it was to Mexico where he meets with Chihuahuas who are battling a huge bumblebee. Will Skippyjon Jones be able to help the Chihuahuas?

I will use ESOL strategy 24, incorporate the culture and the language of second language learners in your curriculum, as the book has a lot of phrases in Spanish. Red Sings from Treetops by Joyce Sidman and illustrated by Pamela Zagarenski won the Caldecott Award I would use this in my classroom for a read aloud. This a story about colors throughout the year. It goes through all the seasons and tells you how the colors change throughout the year. Like how the green leaves change to brown and so on.

ChristinB I will utilize UDL 3.3 guide information processing, visualizations, and manipulations. And I will use ESOL strategy 14, simplify my speech by making it slower and redundant. After I read the story a couple times I can read the story like a song. 6y

Jun onia by Kevin Henkes is a realistic novel I can have in my classroom for independent reading. This is a story about a girl who goes on a beach vacation with her parents. The week they go, Alice turns the 10 years old, and this is a big deal! She wants nothing more than to have the best birthday and to find a junonia shell.

ChristinB When Aunt Kate comes and brings her new boyfriend and his daughter Alice just knows her birthday will not be going as she planned, will Alice find the junonia? I will utilize UDL 7.1, optimize individual choice and autonomy. As well as ESOL strategy 16, I can have the students fill out a reading log and have them present the log to the class or to just me. She Persisted by Chelsea Clinton is a biography picture book I will use for a read aloud. This book tells you about 13 girls who did not have an easy task or life, and they did all what they could to become the greatest. This is an empowering book that will give students a role model as well as open them up to different professions. I will use UDL 2.1 clarify vocabulary and symbols as there are a couple tricky words and phrases.

AlexaDP I love this book! I actually bought it for the Teach Live assignment and then gave it to my niece because I think it will be a great read for her! I‘m probably going to take it back one day to use in my own classroom, but for now it is hers to read. 6y
DominiqueL This book is great and I love your picture for it. I think that pre-introducing the book the week prior to and getting the students excited for it is a great idea. I watched one of our classmates do their TeachLive on this book and it was interesting to see where students could potentially get confused and where there could be teachable moments. I think this is such a great pick! (edited) 6y

One More Acorn by Don Freeman and his son Roy Freeman is a fantasy picture book I will use for guided reading. This is a story was started by Don Freeman, and after he passed away his son decided to finish the writing and to publish this story for his father 30 years later. This is a story about a squirrel gathering nuts before he hibernates for the winter, he is specifically looking for one last acorn.

Oh the Places You‘ll Go by Dr. Suess is a poetry picture book I can use in my classroom for choral reading as it would be fun! This is an inspirational story that is supposed to be about the reader and how amazing of a journey life is. This semester was my first time reading this book and I cannot wait to use it in my future classroom at the end of the school year, this website

Stone Soup by Marcia Brown is a traditional literature picture book that is a Caldecott award winner I would use for storytelling. This is a story about 3 soldiers that come to a strange town they have never seen before. They look for a place to sleep and food, but the villagers have no food or a place to sleep for the soldiers. So the soldiers come up with an idea to cook Stone Soup for the whole town.

ChristinB I would us UDL 2.1 clarify vocabulary as some of the words can be a little tricky. LaurenR I love this book! We used it during summer camp when I was little and the entire camp would help make stone soup. We‘d eat it for lunch and had to watch out for rocks lol it was obviously just vegetable soup but was a fun memory to have 😊 6y
MeghanW I just want to start off with saying you did a great job with your storytelling! I‘ve never heard of the book before and you really made it come to life! Clarifying vocabulary is a strategy I think everyone should use. It can help the students understand the text more clearly. 6y

Young Readers Choice Award winner, Corduroy by Don Freeman is a fantasy picture book I would use for author studies. It‘s about a bear who lives in a department store, and he loses his button on his overalls. One night corduroy goes on a search to find his button, so he can hopefully be taken home one day to be played with.

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein is a poetry picture book I would use for storytelling. It is about a boy who grew up playing on a tree. As the boy gets older he comes back to visit the tree when times are tough, and the tree does all that it can to help the boy until there was nothing left.

ChristinB I would utilize UDL 3.1, activate and supply background knowledge as I can use it for a science lesson on renewable resources. ESOL strategy 13 is activating background knowledge. My Pet Human by Surovec Yasmine is a modern fantasy novel that is a Sunshine State Young Readers Award Winner in 2016-2017, I would use it in my classroom for partner reading. It is a funny story about a cat named Oliver who doesn‘t have a home and prefers it that way, until a freckled-face girl moves into his neighborhood and adopts him and changes his independent kitty ways.

Finding Winnie by Lindsay Mattick Illustrated by Sophie Blackall, is a Caldecott Award winner in 2016, this is a historical fiction picture book I would use in my classroom for a read aloud. This story is based on the true story of the real Winnie the Pooh. It is about a soldier that found a bear, in which he brought with him through all his adventures of the war.

I will also go over the vocabulary words before going into the reading for ESOL students, strategy 13. Is a novel, that won both the Newbery and Coretta Scott King award winner in 2011. It‘s a realistic fiction story about three girls who go and spend a summer with their estranged mother who left them while they were young. I would use this book for literature circles. The One and Only Ivan written by Katherine Applegate is an amazing fantasy novel it is a Newbery Award winner. I could not put this book down, the story captures your heart and pulls at every string possible. The story about Ivan, a silverback gorilla who spent his whole life in his domain, at the Big Top Mall in Washington. Ivan and his friends perform a show three times a day. But when the mall closes, what happens to Ivan and his friends?

ChristinB http://www.flreads.org/Book_Award/extensions/Ivan_files/Ivan.pdf is an activity to do as the class reads the story. It is to put in sequence what happened from beginning to end. I would use this story for literature circles. The ESOL strategy I would use is 30, encourage the use of diagrams and drawings as aids to identify concepts and seeing relationships. 6y
ChristinB Since Ivan draws in the story, I can have each literature circle group draw what Ivan draws as well as what is going on in the story and create a story board as an extended activity. The UDL I would use is 1.1 offer ways of customizing the display of information, by allowing the more creative to draw the scenes, as well as letting some write what happened. #ucflae3414f17 This is a John Newbery Award Winning Book, that I highly recommend for all! 6y
