Now I Can Die in Peace
Now I Can Die in Peace: How ESPN's Sports Guy Found Salvation, with a Little Help from Nomar, Pedro, Shawshank, and the 2004 Red Sox | Bill Simmons
7 posts | 2 read
The New York Times bestseller Now I Can Die in Peace is now available in paperback with a new afterword (and more footnotes) by the author "The Red Sox won the World Series." To Citizen No. 1 of Red Sox Nation, those seven words meant "No more 1918 chants. No more smug glances from Yankee fans. No more worrying about living an entire life -- that's eighty years, followed by death -- without seeing the Red Sox win a Series." But once he was able -- finally -- to type those life-changing words, Bill Simmons decided to look back at his "Sports Guy" columns for the last five years to find out how the miracle came to pass. And that's where the trouble began. The result is Now I Can Die in Peace, a hilarious and fresh new look at some of the best sportswriting in America, with sharp, critical commentary (and fresh insights) from the guy who wrote it in the first place.

As I watched the documentary on Netflix about the Red Sox first World Series win in 86 years I was reminded of the columns that Bill Simmons was writing at the time. He always brought goosebumps and tears as he and his dad sat through years of losses and finally a victory. I decided to look for old columns and found he had put them in a book! $5 was all it took to purchase it. This will be a slow read over months. The other benefit of i🔽

Suet624 This book is that it reminds me that even through years of devastating losses, things can turn around. It will offer me some hope that at some point we can move this country forward toward a place of compassion, fairness, and, perhaps most importantly, to democracy. I should add of course that Simmons often makes me laugh which is super helpful right now. (edited) 1mo
Jeg Lovely to read your comment. I too hold that hope for your country and the world. ❤️🤞 1mo

TheBookHippie I‘m a CUBS fan. I get it. And the arc of justice is looooong. But regimes never last forever. We must however. 1mo
Suet624 @TheBookHippie congrats on the Cubs win! Long overdue. Love your sentiments. 1mo
Bookwormjillk That‘s right. The future isn‘t written yet. He makes me laugh too. I used to love his podcast when he would call his friend Jack at work and talk bad about the Yankees. 1mo
Bookwormjillk Also thought the documentary was well done. I might watch it again. 1mo
Suet624 @Bookwormjillk I thought the doc was good too. I think it could have gone to 4 episodes outlining just how brutal that playoff series with the Yankees was. How cold, how late at night, just how stressful those games were. More fan comments would have been good too. I‘ll definitely watch again. 😊 and Simmons and Jack! So good. 1mo
Megabooks Thank you for sharing this. I hope things turn around in time. There is dark before the most beautiful dawns. 1mo
Suet624 @Megabooks May it come to pass sooner rather than later. 😊💕 1mo
sarahbarnes Thanks for this ♥️♥️ 1mo

Catching up on #Scarathlon2022 #PhotoPrompt - my selection for curse, or reversing the curse in this case. October 2004 was one to remember for Red Sox fans!

One of the best things that takes place in the fall is the World Series (especially when the Red Sox win!)

Today is by far my favorite 👏 day 👏 of 👏 the 👏 year!!! Bring on baseball season! My husband & I started an annual Opening Day watch party at the sports bar he managed over 10 years ago. He doesn‘t work there any longer, but we are still heavily involved with planning the festivities. 75+ of our favorite baseball fans will join us for the day to watch A LOT of ⚾️, eat 🌭 & have a 🍺 or two. Starting my day with delicious ☕️ from @Chrissyreadit

Chrissyreadit Have fun!! Glad you like it! I love black dog coffee. 7y
