Fighter, Faker, Student, Spy. Seventeen-year-old Reagan Elizabeth Hillis is used to changing identities overnight, lying to every friend she's ever had, and pushing away anyone who gets too close. Trained in mortal combat and weaponry since birth, Reagan is expected to follow in her parents footsteps and join the ranks of the most powerful top-secret agency in the world, the Black Angels. But that was before she met Luke, the only boy who has ever managed to get through her defenses and make her fall in love. Now, Reagan has to decide: Will she use her incredible talents to lead the dangerous life she was born into, or follow her heart and embrace Luke and a normal life? And does she even have a choice at all? Find out if you are ready to join the Black Angels in this captivating and emotional page-turner from debut novelist Kristen Orlando!

This read really young (like middle grade) until the last 10% when the violence and language picked up. There was a twist at the end I wasn‘t expecting in a YA book, and though the rest of the book wasn‘t bad, I think I was just too old for it. Most of the time I got annoyed with Reagan‘s behavior.

⭐️⭐️💫

MarriedtoMrT I got an ARC for this a few years ago and just could not get into it. 6y
Kristy_K @MarriedtoMrT I almost quit a few times but three something interesting would happen so I would plough through. 6y

I really enjoyed most of the book, and almost thought it as one of my favourites. But as the book hit the climax things got a little less interesting.

I'm culling my TBR pile lately by reading one chapter of a book to see if I'm interested, and this made the cut. Inevitable Ally Carter comparison -- It's like Gallagher Girls if Carter was writing it now without the Girls. Make Embassy Row's Grace an elite black ops legacy without the boarding school, and you have something like this. Character driven while also having a strong outside danger to heighten tension and advance the plot.

Not what I expected! I thought "oh, a fun spy YA romp in the vein of Ally Carter, Gallagher Girls (the early books)". Not a bit! When I started and realized it wouldn't be fun spying--our heroine suffers from spy parent induced panic attacks--I started to expect a complete break from spying. But no. This book is surprisingly dark and will apparently have a sequel (I'd hoped it was standalone). It's okay, but weird to categorize.

#2017Book61
The action in this novel is intense and detailed. The main character reminds me of Katniss, if Katniss had spent her whole life being trained as a Career, instead of plucked out of District 12. The romance in the novel doesn't suffocate the more important aspects, and the main character's interactions with her friends and family sound authentic and fit the way a teenager acts and speaks.

HippieChickHomeschool Stacked it. You had me at Katniss. 8y

This reminded my of the Gallagher Girls books but on a more awesome level. I started it this afternoon and only had a break for dinner. Can't wait for the next in the series.

Reviewsbylola The author is someone I "know" as she is local and we have mutual friends. I am just so unsure of this type of book though that I haven't picked it up yet. 8y
mischa @Reviewsbylola I understand perfectly. Some books just aren't your thing. If you do decide to try it, maybe go the library route if you can. Or, even try one one of the Gallagher Girls books first. 8y

This is a great debut YA thriller. With no social media profile, Reagan is not your typical high school teen. Trained in mortal combat, things have never been "normal" for her. Her parents, Black Angel special ops for an elite branch of the CIA, have told her she may choose their life or an "ordinary" one when she turns 18. What will it be? Great kick-ass female protagonist shows you who's boss!???

Reviewsbylola My friend went to school with this author and she is local to me but I haven't decided if I'm going to pick it up yet. Not my typical fare. 8y
Alfoster @Reviewsbylola Not usually mine either--don't read a lot of YA--but this was a quick read and fun & unusual teen! 8y
Reviewsbylola You've made me more curious now! Maybe I'll read it after all! 8y

4/5 Stars.
This was a fast-paced read with a good mix of teenage emotions and action. Reagan's parents are Black Angel agents, a special task force that is a closely guarded secret. This means that Reagan has lived a life filled with special ops training and abrupt departures from one life to the next. Just as she starts to want more than a life on the run, an assignment goes sour and Reagan refuses to leave her loved ones behind.

I wonder if they were able to delete this before final prints. Probably not. Instantly dated while trying to appear current. #ARC

I'm not sure what I'm most looking forward to reading in 2017 but I know what I really need to read. ⬆️

I try to use NetGalley sparingly because I'm pretty terrified my fickle reading habits will mean I don't read what I've requested. I was really excited about these two but now they are languishing. They're both released soon into 2017 so I need to read them ASAP. I'm actual stalled at 70% of Wintersong but that means not much left to read!

hwheaties Wintersong is SO GOOD. 8y
MarriedtoMrT @hwheaties I was really into it in the beginning but I feel like it's meandering a bit through the middle. I'm at a turning point so I'm sure it will end strong. 8y
