After the Armistice Ball
After the Armistice Ball | Catriona McPherson
7 posts | 8 read | 9 to read
A classic murder-mystery set among the struggling upper classes of 1920s Perthshire as, in the aftermath of the First World War, their comfortable world begins to crumble. Dandy Gilver, her husband back from the War, her children off at school and her uniform growing musty in the attic, is bored to a whimper in the spring of 1923 and a little light snooping seems like harmless fun. Before long, though, the puzzle of what really happened to the Duffy diamonds after the Armistice Ball has been swept aside by a sudden, unexpected death in a lonely seaside cottage in Galloway. Society and the law seem ready to call it an accident but Dandy, along with Cara Duffy's fianc Alec, is sure that there is more going on than meets the eye. What is being hidden by members of the Duffy family: the watchful Lena, the cold and distant Clemence and old Gregory Duffy with his air of quiet sadness, not to mention Cara herself whose secret always seems just tantalizingly out of view? Dandy must learn to trust her instincts and swallow most of her scruples if he is to uncover the truth and earn the right to call herself a sleuth.

Upper class Dandy(Dandelion)Gilver, when asked by a friend to do some sleuthing for stolen diamonds, sees it as fun distraction. What first appears to be a lark becomes serious when murder occurs.Lots of tangled webs, dead end trails, convoluted threads-I felt confused while reading,as if I was in a maze, just like Dandy‘s meandering thoughts & spaghetti like strands in her mind, that never seemed to meet.

This is another read from the bottom of my TBR. (I mean are the oldest books at the bottom or at the top? 🤷🏻‍♀️) anyway it was a soft pick. I liked the writing and the characters but the denouement was pretty unbelievable and I‘d figured out the murderer much earlier than the sweet but bumbling amateur investigator. Still very enjoyable and as this is the first in a series I‘d forgive those tiny weaknesses and head to the next one for sure. ⬇️

Centique PS these are geese I saw yesterday flying in formation. I‘ve never seen that before (I don‘t think we have a lot of geese here?) There were hundreds of them and they were as noisy as heck! 3y
Ruthiella I‘ve got books I‘ve been schlepping around, meaning to read, from the last century. I have no idea where the top or bottom of my TBR is! 😆 3y
LeahBergen What @Ruthiella said. 🤣 3y
Centique @Ruthiella @LeahBergen I feel ya! Maybe instead of a pile it‘s an amorphous blob of books following us around, a sad cloud of books, or in the most extreme cases (me!) a list that is a doorway to a universe of flying spinning books, expanding ever outwards, the edges unknowable 🪐💫☄️ 3y

Here's some 1920's Scottish upperclass #style for you. I love the main character Dandy Gilver.

JazzFeathers Cool! I'm reading lots of fiction set in the 1920s lately. Will have to add this to my pile 😀 7y
Jess_Read_This 📚#Stacking based on the cover alone! I then read the synopsis and it sounds like a delightful read! 7y

I enjoy reading about dogs but prefer cats in real life 😸 Ronja doesn't seem to like the cover but at least she did me the favor of pausing her grooming to glance at the camera👍
