The Serpent and the Rainbow
The Serpent and the Rainbow | Wade Davis
4 posts | 8 read | 10 to read
A scientific investigation and personal adventure story about zombis and the voudoun culture of Haiti by a Harvard scientist. In April 1982, ethnobotanist Wade Davis arrived in Haiti to investigate two documented cases of zombispeople who had reappeared in Haitian society years after they had been officially declared dead and had been buried. Drawn into a netherworld of rituals and celebrations, Davis penetrated the vodoun mystique deeply enough to place zombification in its proper context within vodoun culture. In the course of his investigation, Davis came to realize that the story of vodoun is the history of Haitifrom the African origins of its people to the successful Haitian independence movement, down to the present day, where vodoun culture is, in effect, the government of Haitis countryside. The Serpent and the Rainbow combines anthropological investigation with a remarkable personal adventure to illuminate and finally explain a phenomenon that has long fascinated Americans.

Thank you for the tag @MySharonaK! ❤ 💕

1. I'm not sure what treasure hunting for books actually means. 😅 Does it mean you're looking for a specific books in thrift bookstores? If so, I do that only rarely. The tagged book is one of the few I went treasure hunting for.

2. Coffee!!! ❤ ☕ ❤ 🤗

I'll tag @Yuka if you are interested. Are you still there? I haven't heard from you in a while!

It's been years since I've read this and lost my copy somewhere in between my many moves. I got myself another copy while I'm visiting family in the US.
