Filled with moments of deep emotion and unexpected humor, this understated and wise novel explores the complexities of living with OCD and offers the prospect of hope, happiness and healing. Perfect for readers who love Eleanor & Park and All the Bright Places.ADAMS GOALS:Grow immediately.Find courage.Keep courage.Get normal.Marry Robyn Plummer. The instant Adam Spencer Ross meets Robyn Plummer in his Young Adult OCD Support Group, he is hopelessly, desperately drawn to her. Robyn has an hypnotic voice, blue eyes the shade of an angry sky, and ravishing beauty that makes Adams insides ache. Shes also just been released from a residential psychiatric programthe kind for the worst, most difficult-to-cure cases; the kind that Adam and his fellow support group members will do anything to avoid joining.Adam immediately knows that he has to save Robyn, must save Robyn, or die trying. But is it really Robyn who needs rescuing? And is it possible to have a normal relationship when your life is anything but?Select praise for The Unlikely Hero of Room 13B:. . . achingly authentic. Like Augustus Waters before him, Adam Spencer Ross will renew your faith in real-life superheroes and shatter your heart in equal measures. Kirkus Reviews, StarredThis book made me laugh, cry, think, and kept me coming back for more. The GuardianAdam is a protagonist that readers will root for. VOYAHonest, fresh, and funny . . . Toten employs information about OCD like grace notes in this deft and compelling narrative. BooklistAdam is a fresh and complex character, and far more than the sum of his symptoms. I find this book decent so far. I‘m only a few chapters in but I do enjoy how it looks into OCD and how it can really trouble your life. It tends to get challenging living with ocd so seeing a book about ocd and you actually can relate to it is amazing.

This book was recommended by a student. But I didn‘t get much out of it. The main character was interesting enough and the side characters too...but it still felt flat somehow? I am going to use it for my #Booked2020 challenge though, so there is that: Summer|Eccentric MC — we can do these in any order right?

Cinfhen Yup!! So nice that a student recommended a book to you!!!! To bad it wasn‘t a pick😉 5y

This was definitely a thought provoking book. It really dove into so many different aspects of mental illnesses and managing them. I love the dynamic between the teens and adults and the idea of heroes throughout the book. I feel like the biggest point was that everyone needs saving at some point and it‘s okay to ask for help or let someone help you. Definitely a powerful novel with a big message.

#2018Book111
The best part of this book is how accurately the author shows what it's like to have OCD. The worst part of this book is that it falls into that typical YA trap of having a character with serious mental health issues be suddenly cured because she found a boyfriend.

Jennick2004 I might have to pick up. As a sufferer of OCD (and I grew up in a household with other sufferers) it always interests me to read about it. 6y

When I saw the letter I was still a few chapters away and it was all I could do to not skip ahead and read it. (pg. 157)

"The relief was faster than instant. And relief trumped shame. Relief even trumped his fear of her reaction. So much relief from letting go of one dirty little secret? Or were all secrets dirty? Maybe even the clean ones were like magnets inevitably attracting slithery things." ~ Adam on revealing secrets

RadicalReader @DebbieGrillo instantly had to add this book to my TBR because of how much it resonates w me to the core with how similar the main character is to Augustus Waters 8y

"He wasn't good with girls' faces. If he ruled the world, girls would say every single thing that was on their minds. He sucked at guessing, and that whole reading-between-the-lines thing was so behind him, he couldn't get there with a map."

Oh Adam, you are so far from alone!

4🌟 In this book, teens take on superhero names in a therapeutic group for their OCD. The book mainly follows Adam (Batman) as he tries to save the girl while sinking deeper into his rituals. As a person with OCD, I found it mildly triggering, but probably because Adam and I have many of the same problems. It's a great story about family, young love, and the trials of being a teen with mental illness.

Any ideas where I should go next? I was thinking of leaving it as is or maybe coloring the background black or gray. Suggestions?

Blair_Reads I really like it how it is 😁👏🏻👏🏻 8y

Donna_sBookMinute I like the idea of experimenting with a background. A light-to-medium shade of grey might work. I'm thinking the black might be too close to the navy -- especially since it would be right next to it. 8y
JEMoutrageous Each fan could be different shades of one color. 6 fans of red colors, 6 fans of oranges, 6 fans of yellows, etc. 8y
Megabooks @JEMoutrageous I like this idea! I hadn't thought of it. Thanks! 8y
Megabooks @Donna_sBookMinute I agree. I think if I go with a solid background, I should go with my new light gray marker. 8y

"Miracles sparked in the night air, bloomed and burst open before him." Although this doesn't give the main voice of this book, it's a pretty good quote, if I do say so myself;) Sorry I haven't posted for awhile, I lost my iPod which is what I use for Litsy. Thankfully, I got some good reading in. ?

Audio YA oh how I absolutely loved this book. Humorous and candid, its account of coping with being different in a world that makes it very hard to be self-accepting is brilliantly done. A book for those with a love of alphabet soup, what I call psychiatric labels, or a nonjudgmental take on them.
