Once upon a time, there was a girl who wanted to be pretty . . .Aza's singing is the fairest in all the land, and the most unusual. She can "throw" her voice so it seems to come from anywhere. But singing is only one of the two qualities prized in the Kingdom of Ayortha. Aza doesn't possess the other: beauty. Not even close. She's hidden in the shadows in her parents' inn, but when she becomes lady-in-waiting to the new queen, she has to step into the lightespecially when the queen demands a dangerous favor. A magic mirror, a charming prince, a jealous queen, palace intrigue, and an injured king twine into a maze that Aza must penetrate to save herself and her beloved kingdom.

#bookmoods

I rarely #dnf but just this week I had two! Got to 100ish pages in each of these and didn‘t care enough to continue on, boring.

I listened to this on audio, and I'm so glad that I did! Much of the book is told in song and the audio version I listened to had a full cast of excellent singers.

I thought this was a really creative story. Definitely draws on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs but only in a few elements. It‘s not just a retelling, it‘s an entirely different interpretation with similar ideas. I listened to the audiobook which had full-blown song performances...but I was not at all impressed with the song compositions and the singers were okay.

This was frustratingly annoying. The plot barely made sense, the instalove was weird (did Aza only love Ijori because he was a Prince? Because he had the personality of a tree stump), and parts of it made no sense at all.

I was looking forward to her upcoming book, Ogre Enchanted, but I think I‘ll wait and read reviews first. #MountTBR

Smrloomis 😂😂😂 “the personality of a tree stump” - otherwise sorry this was so bad! 6y

This book is really annoying...but I keep reading! I can‘t believe this is written by the same author as Ella Enchanted. And why do ALL of the character‘s seem so clueless!

LibrarianRyan I completely agree. It was the first and only Hale I have hated. 6y
hissingpotatoes I had the same reaction! 6y

A cute little departure from heavier reads.

As a huge fan of Ella Enchanted I have to say, this book was ok. I honestly think I would have liked it more if I had read it when I was younger (as I did with Ella Enchanted)... It was interesting and a different take on Snow White... It's easy to read, different and I always appreciate the light romance. Very sweet & innocent .

Loved Ella Enchanted, loved this book. A retelling of Snow White as you can probably tell from the apple. #readandeat #somethingforsept

My eldest daughter's second favorite book, so I gave it a read. It was a bit cumbersome. Lots of singing. And a bit too much negative talk throughout the book even though it is redeemed in the end encouraging self-acceptance.
