Midnight Robber
Midnight Robber | Nalo Hopkinson
It's Carnival time and the Caribbean-colonized planet of Toussaint is celebrating with music, dance, and pageantry. Masked "Midnight Robbers" waylay revelers with brandished weapons and spellbinding words. To young Tan-Tan, the Robber Queen is simply a favorite costume to wear at the festival-until her power-corrupted father commits an unforgiveable crime. Suddenly, both father and daughter are thrust into the brutal world of New Half-Way Tree. Here monstrous creatures from folklore are real, and the humans are violent outcasts in the wilds. Tan-Tan must reach into the heart of myth and become the Robber Queen herself. For only the Robber Queen's legendary powers can save her life . . . and set her free.

Midnight Robber came highly recommended. The creole dialect makes it a slow start-it‘s a bit like reading Shakespeare-it takes a few pages to get into the swing of things. The Afro-Caribbean mythology is grabbing my attention, but it‘s going to take me more time to get through than most sci-fi books.

I love everything about this book. It's sci-fi/fantasy. It's written in patois. It's full of cultural references. The female protagonist kicks butt. There are strange creatures and made up planets. It's just amazing.

The setting is another planet but the trauma is very real. Tan-Tan‘s privileged life on Toussaint is thrown into upheaval by her father‘s actions. They must go into exile on a criminal planet whose native people are treated as subhuman. As if that weren‘t enough, her father‘s actions cause further trauma to Tan-Tan as she grows older, pushing her further to the outskirts of society. https://cannonballread.com/2020/12/midnight-robber-elcicco/

Love fantasy with a dash of sci fi combined with West Indian folklore? This is the book for you. If you're not familiar with Caribbean vernacular it may take you a minute, but it's definitely worth it.

Really well written, intense, moving story. Content warning hidden behind spoiler comment. Recommend, if you feel you can engage with the hard parts of it.

NeamhainHughes Content warning, this story contains CSA (child sexual assault). It was hard and took me a while to finish the book, but it was handled well and the story was very well done. 5y

On the planet of Toussaint, Tan Tan dresses up as the Robber Queen at carnival time. She and her father are exiled to a prison planet, and to survive she must become a legend queen herself. Above and beyond the plot, the language is what reels you in, a form of patois so evocative and compelling of the Caribbean culture and identities.

RJHowe Nalo is a wonderful and vastly underrated writer. I studied with her years ago and learned she is a great person as well. 5y
Tonton @RJHowe So lucky! I‘ve been a fan since Brown Girl in the Ring! 5y
RJHowe Hope you enjoyed Salt Roads as well I was lucky enough to do some of the research on that one. I think Nalo is teaching in California now. 5y

My loan expired and I'm letting it go. Maybe I'll give it another try someday but not now. I just never felt like picking it up again once I had set it down.

Slow going, still waiting to fall in with the cadence of the patois. I wish an audio were available in my libraries, this screams to be told in oral tradition. It's good but hard to navigate.

1. Disney's Zombies soundtrack 😬😳. Don't judge, I have children (...who wanted to watch something else)
2. 3-ish? I'm not very far at all but the patois is a little bit of a chore to read...
3. I don't know, either The Stand, one of the Stormlight Archive books, or Count of Monte Cristo (all of these are favorites btw!)
4. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Do it if it looks interesting, I hate trying to remember who did what meme already

Told in a series of 'tales' this book might jump a bit but it's entirely worth it. It tells the story of Tan Tan, daughter of Antonio who gets exiled with her father and has to make her own way. It was dark and painful at times but totally worth it. It's a Caribbean inspired hard sci-fi, uniquely original in that. #Diverseathon

This book was INCREDIBLE. Like nothing I've ever read. I was worried because of the dialect the author chose to use. I thought that it was just the prologue that was written that way but it was the whole book. It took me a few pages to adjust to it but then it really began to flow. The story was powerful, charming, and at times heart-breaking. I loved it. Be warned, there are heavy sexual themes that some might find difficult to deal with.

Foxyfictionista Also, this author used the word 'boobaloops' in this book. Twice. I need to find a way to incorporate this word into my vocabulary. 😄 7y

Foxyfictionista @TrishB It was used in the context of someone's heartbeat (like he made my heart go boobaloops) but it was also used for sexy time. So maybe it's for home use only. 😝 7y
