Dog Years
Dog Years | Mark Doty
6 posts | 13 read | 4 to read
Why do dogs speak so profoundly to our inner lives? When Mark Doty decides to adopt a dog as a companion for his dying partner, he finds himself bringing home Beau, a large golden retriever, malnourished and in need of loving care. Beau joins Arden, the black retriever, to complete their family. As Beau bounds back into life, the two dogs become Mark Doty's intimate companions, his solace, and eventually the very life force that keeps him from abandoning all hope during the darkest days. Their tenacity, loyalty, and love inspire him when all else fails. Dog Years is a remarkable work: a moving and intimate memoir interwoven with profound reflections on our feelings for animals and the lessons they teach us about life, love, and loss. Mark Doty writes about the heart-wrenching vulnerability of dogs, the positive energy and joy they bring, and the gift they bear us of unconditional love. A book unlike any other, Mark Doty's surprising meditation is radiantly unsentimental yet profoundly affecting. Beautifully written, Dog Years is a classic in the making.

@IndoorDame made a post that reminded me of one of my favorite poems to read and teach. I thought I‘d leave it here and ask everyone to go and give your furry Zen masters (canine, feline, equine, etc.) a little one-on-one time. 🩷

"A walk is a walk and must be taken; breakfast and dinner come when they are due. The routines of the living are inviolable, no hiatus called on account of misery, spiritual crisis, or awful weather."

I picked this up at Goodwill, and decided to read it for #LitsyAtoZ #D, but it most certainly meets February's prompt for #ReadWithMrBook #TearJerker. This is a lovely memoir about Mark and his dogs, Arden and Beau, but you will most likely cry. @BookishMarginalia @MrBook

Trashcanman Hi Harper, I hope you are doing well. Miss talking to you. 4y
AmyG I read books and people die...and not a tear. But when pets die....I weep. 😳 4y

I did not enjoy this book and it is one of the few I've rated 1 star. I just couldn't get into this book. It does have a wintry cover though.

Poignant, good, real. I started this book when I lived in Idaho, alone, over the summer and I could not bear it. I recommend reading this with your pup within reach. A beautiful exploration into the human experience of a dog‘s life.
