Making of the Wizard of Oz: Movie Magic and Studio Power in the Prime of MGM
Making of the Wizard of Oz: Movie Magic and Studio Power in the Prime of MGM | Aljean Harmetz
5 posts | 4 read | 3 to read
Why was Buddy Ebsen replaced by Jack as the Tin Man? What lifelong effects did young stardom have on Judy Garland? How did they melt a witch, stir up a tornado, and get monkeys to fly?It was 1938, the heyday of Hollywood, when studios were discovering the use of color; the importance of star power, and how to make beautiful, sprawling movies. From this was born The Wizard of Oz, a film that, 60 years later, continues to captivate us. It seems we can never get enough of the dishy inside details, the amazing feats of production that made it such a spectacle, and the personalities both in front of the camera and behind the scenes. Now, timed to coincide with the theatrical rerelease -- which will include never-before-seen footage -- this is the book Oz aficionados will turn to for more information on America's favorite movie. A bestselling classic since it was first published in 1977, The Making of The Wizard of Oz is as ageless as the film itself jam-packed with fascinating facts and telling asides.

If you ever wondered why the Wicked Witch talks about an insect that you never actually see in the movie, it's because of this deleted scene. Now all that exists is the rather catchy song, "The Jitterbug," (recorded for the film) and these home movies by composer Harold Arlen. It's also been restored in a lot of the stage versions. You can see the original here: https://youtu.be/6n3aWn9j1j0

rubyslippersreads @SharonGoforth It's a fun song; I'm glad they're performing it in new versions. 😀 7y

Birdsong28 @rubyslippersreads I haven't read the book tagged but it might be of interest to you thought about it as I love Wizard of Oz but it didn't appeal to me. Remember watching a programme called Hollywood Treasure and they managed to track down one of the pairs. 8y
Birdsong28 @rubyslippersreads Thanks it looks good but it looks like its out of print and used ones are about £17! Will keep an eye out for it tho you never know where you might find a copy of it! 8y
