The heatwave of 1976. Following the accidental drowning of her sister, sixteen-year-old Nif and her family move to a small village on the Welsh borders to escape their grief. But rural seclusion doesnt bring any relief. As her family unravels, Nif begins to put together her own form of witchcraft collecting talismans from the sun-starved land. That is, until she meets Mally, a teen boy who takes a keen interest in her, and has his own secret rites to divulge.

Set in an isolated Welsh village in the sweltering heatwave of 1976, Nif‘s family try and escape their grief at the loss of her sister amidst all sorts of odd people and goings on in the village. Billed as folk horror, the author calls this “her peculiar little book” and it was peculiar in parts; mostly though it was a really well written coming of age story with a creepily sinister backdrop (nb disturbing in parts with some animal cruelty)

TrishB I think someone warned me off this because of animal cruelty? Is this the case? 4y
IamIamIam This sounds great!! 4y
JillR @trishb Yes, those were the disturbing parts. Birds/insects more than animals. Won‘t say more in case you decide to read, but yes made me shudder more than once... 4y
TrishB Thanks 👍🏻 4y

Not a winner for me.
Didn't sense any 'horror', the animal harm seemed unnecessary, and no real detail about 'The Creed', which I felt would have been interesting...

Wow this book was dark. It starts off with that sense of heat and sweat & dust of a really hot summer, then it gradually starts to get a creepy feeling running underneath it all, especially once Mally & his mother join the story. Until it finally boils over into that ending. If you like your stories with a dark drama to them, I highly recommend this book. #Scareathlon #TeamSlaughter #ScaryScavengerHunt #WithAWitchInIt 12points #PointsTotal-909

Back to reading, so far this has a very drowsy, High summer feel to it. Which is appropriate because here in Sydney it‘s gonna be high 20sC(84F)to low 30sC(93F)all week. Yay. In this novel, Nif & her family have moved to Wales for the summer after the death of her sister. She has a form of talisman magic she calls Creed but until she meets Mally she has no real power. Should finish this tonight. #Scareathlon #TeamSlaughter 1point #PointsTotal-891

I started struggling a bit with the last book,so I‘m switching to this witchy thriller. Set during the heatwave of 1976, 16yr old Nif & her family move to small village on the Welsh border after the drowning of her sister. To deal with her grief, she starts to practice a talismanic form of witchcraft until a local boy teaches her his own type of rites. Sounds like a classic British folk horror. #Scareathlon #TeamSlaughter 1point #PointsTotal-836

#ChillingPhotoChallenge #day7 #Orange There‘s a variety of Halloween orange items in this picture, I‘m not a huge fan of the colour myself but it is everywhere this time of year. The novel is about a family that move to Wales after the death of their daughter. Her sister finds solace in talismans until she meets a boy that changes everything. It‘s full of folk magic & a very British horror. #Scareathlon #TeamSlaughter 2points #PointsTotal-70

#BookMail Pt1 It‘s been awhile since I‘ve had BookMail, #somanybookssolittlefunds unfortunately. But I‘ve paid off all my Afterpay accounts so one little one won‘t hurt will it? Well, maybe not so little. But it‘s just one! This is a recent release from the UK, another book set during the “heatwave” of 1976. After her sisters drowning, 16yr old Nif & her family move to a village on the Welsh border where she starts her own version of magic.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa We have to treat ourselves sometimes too! 5y
