Bee Season
Bee Season: A Novel | Myla Goldberg
8 posts | 36 read | 13 to read
Eliza Naumann, a seemingly unremarkable nine-year-old, expects never to fit into her gifted family: her autodidact father, Saul, absorbed in his study of Jewish mysticism; her brother, Aaron, the vessel of his father's spiritual ambitions; and her brilliant but distant lawyer-mom, Miriam. But when Eliza sweeps her school and district spelling bees in quick succession, Saul takes it as a sign that she is destined for greatness. In this altered reality, Saul inducts her into his hallowed study and lavishes upon her the attention previously reserved for Aaron, who in his displacement embarks upon a lone quest for spiritual fulfillment. When Miriam's secret life triggers a familial explosion, it is Eliza who must order the chaos. Myla Goldberg's keen eye for detail brings Eliza's journey to three-dimensional life. As she rises from classroom obscurity to the blinding lights and outsized expectations of the National Bee, Eliza's small pains and large joys are finely wrought and deeply felt. Not merely a coming-of-age story, Goldberg's first novel delicately examines the unraveling fabric of one family. The outcome of this tale is as startling and unconventional as her prose, which wields its metaphors sharply and rings with maturity. The work of a lyrical and gifted storyteller, Bee Season marks the arrival of an extraordinarily talented new writer. From the Trade Paperback edition.

#MusicalNewYear #CarryingTheBanner So, my mind went to the word “banner” and that lead me to think about those spelling bee banners which made me remember this quirky novel. Eliza has a knack for spelling really intricate, obscure words which quickly elevates her to become a local spelling bee champion. The pressures from attention and a complicated home life start to shatter her love for language and lead to some interesting discoveries.

VioletBramble Love this book and 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. 5y

My bookshelves are a hot mess right now! I recently moved into a new house and I‘m still in the process of organizing my library. These are the first and last books of one of my shelves. Clearly, I‘m not going for alphabetical by author 😂 #literalbookends #24in48 #challengepost

rwmg By title perhaps? 6y
Bookworm83 @rwmg Nope! As of right now I just have a mess 😜 I do have the classics on a different shelf than everything else. 6y
BookishMe Hi again. FYI - The parcel had arrived in the States on 30th Jan. Not sure how long it will take to reach your town / local post office. 6y

So I'm #PayingItForward and donating these books to the local library. Hoping other's might enjoy some books that I did not. Besides, it clears up room on my shelf for new books🤓

shawnmooney I loved The Bee Season so so much! Apparently Goldberg hasn't written anything else worth reading since, which is disappointing. But I loved that novel, especially its incredible depiction of adolescent male sexuality. 8y
Cinfhen That book was just so out there for me, but I did enjoy the family dynamics 8y

#uniquefact: Putnam County Spelling Bee is a sweet, nerdy musical, and when I went to see it I was drafted as one of 4 or 5 audience-member extras/ contestants. So I sat onstage, and then got called up to spell a word: "gardyloo." I was so excited! I knew both what it meant and how to spell it! So I spelled it out correctly. Alas, the script called for me to get it wrong. I am told I did a very convincing double-take when I was sent off.

LeahBergen Ha!!! 👍🏼 8y

SusanInTiburon @Dragon People used to call it out the window before they tossed their slops into the street. It's derived from French (gardez l'eau) meaning watch out for the water. Makes you grateful for indoor plumbing and underground sewers. 8y
shawnmooney Ha! Wonderful anecdote! I loved Bee Season and wish there were other Myla Goldberg novels to enjoy. 8y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Ha!! 😂 That's fantastic!! 8y
Yossarian When I saw Spelling Bee, a particularly good speller from the audience got called on three times in a row until she got one wrong. 8y
SusanInTiburon @Yossarian Funny! Afterward I was glad I got eliminated right away. It was impossible to take the show in as a show from onstage! 8y
SusanInTiburon @shawnmooney I agree with you on Bee Season. 8y

Dragon Thanks for such a cool new word. I'm going to try it out on my friends and see if they know it 👍 8y
