General Matsika's children steal out of the house on a forbidden adventure--and disappear. In Zimbabwe, in the year 2194, the children's parents call in Africa's most unusual detectives--the Ear, the Eye and the Arm--who have powers far beyond those of other human beings. The children must avoid the evils of the past, the technology of the future, and a motley assortment of criminals in order to return home safely. 1995 Newbery Honor Book; ALA Notable Book; ALA Best Book for Young Adults.

#ucflae3414f19 The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm is a children's science fiction novel written by Nancy Farmer. This tells a story of a chief general leading a battle against the gangs which terrorize the nation in 2194. This book would be great as an IR for grade levels 4-5.

Erinehart https://www.shmoop.com/the-ear-the-eye-the-arm/ This is a great resource for this text to get a better insight of what the text is about as it provides a summary. 4y
Erinehart The UDL strategy that I would use for this novel is 2.1 “Clarify vocabulary and symbols.“ Since this is science fiction, there are some vocabulary words that may be unfamiliar to the students.
An ESOL strategy that would be great for this text is #9 “Teach note-taking strategies: T-lists, time lines etc.“

DrSpalding This definitely looks like a middle grade novel and could be used as a literature circle or as you noted independent reading. 4y

Middle grade book club prep, January '17 edition. This was one of my fave middle grade books growing up, so I'm excited to chat about it tomorrow.
