Set in Singapore between the early 1970's and 1990's, Inheritance follows the fissures that develop after the disappearance of teenage Amrit. Although her absence is brief, Amrit returns as a different person. As traditional Punjabis, the family struggles to cope with who Amrit is - her manic highs and lows, and her attempts to find solutions to a problem she doesn't fully understand. Narain, Amrit's brother and closest ally, also leads a secret life in order to avoid trouble with the government. But, although he knows his father is not proud, he is not ashamed of who he is. As the family awaits a transformation in Amrit, Singapore's political, social and cultural landscape rapidly changes, and while some in the family feel this as a loss, for some of them the future will be brighter - but it's a questions of whether the changes will arrive in time. With the traditional expectations of their country on the one hand, and their own volition on the other, how will this family avoid imploding? Inheritance is a universal story of family, identity and belonging.

So I decided that 2017 will be the year I actively seek out and read more literature by Singaporean authors. Inheritance, which I bought and read last month, was a pretty perfect start to this journey.

Edit: Recently committed to the #LitsyChallenge2017 & going to use this for the square 'Set in the 1970s'.

#somethingforsept Books that made me hungry. The truth is, plenty of books make me hungry. But this one especially as it is set in Singapore. A dear friend gave me this book when I was back home in July. She told me that I should read it before I left Singapore because food is a big feature. I didn't manage to & now have to read it in bits and bobs as I keep missing Singapore food when I'm reading it! (Sushi dinner in the making in the background)

missjenniferlowe I love that cover! 8y
ValerieAndBooks Your dinner looks so good, too! 8y
Varshitha Sushi, yum!! 8y

DebinHawaii I will look for this one! Have you read any of the Aunty Lee Singapore mystery books by Ovidia Yu? 8y
RealLifeReading @missjenniferlowe it's a great cover! 8y
RealLifeReading @ValerieAndBooks @Varshitha thanks! We love making sushi at home! 8y
BooksForEmpathy So talented! Nice sushi dinner 😍. 8y
RealLifeReading @DebinHawaii I'm not entirely sure if it can be found in the US. I know her other book Inheritance is available. But this one is published by a Singapore publisher. 8y
RealLifeReading @DebinHawaii oh and the Aunty Lee books yes. I liked the first but not the second. I did hear that the third was better though so may try that 8y
DebinHawaii @RealLifeReading I liked them all but the first & third were my favorites. 8y

The Library @ Orchard in Singapore is located in a shopping mall along Singapore's popular shopping street called Orchard Road. It's a bit small and only caters to adults but just look at this place, as seen from the staircase to the second floor. It is a thing of beauty #librarylove #singapore

Simona @RealLifeReading Indeed, just look at this place😍 8y
Mayread My first library was in the bottom of a shopping area, bit it had an enormous kids' section & basically served as a place for parents to deposit kids while shopping. Worked for me! That's a lovely library. Those shelves. 🙌🏽 8y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I love the lighting in the shelves! 8y

CynCruz23 So cool! I kinda love a library being part of a shopping mall, convenient and maybe offers a little respite when you're doing your shopping. But I still love stand alone libraries in quiet neighborhoods 8y
MrBook 😎👍🏻 8y
LA_Mead Beautiful! 8y
RealLifeReading @Skiles that sounds like a great first library! 8y
RealLifeReading @CynCruz23 heh there are hardly quiet neighborhoods in Singapore! 8y
