I really enjoyed this. Quick read. Aside from Nick and Rachel, I was also interested in Astrid‘s story. I‘ve put book 2 on hold at the library. Hope it comes in soon!

This is the pick for my book club this month. I‘m enjoying it but the meeting is on Thursday and I‘m on page 65. I just don‘t think I‘ll get it done in time. I‘m seriously considering a book club hiatus. The school year is off to a great start but I have an extra prep this year and my time is too precious for reading that feels required.

Karisa Yup, I know that feeling. What seems easy over summer becomes impossible once school starts again. Maybe the audiobook can help? I find myself listening while I prep or do chores to keep up 😊 2mo

Sace @Karisa school just takes over everything from August to December. It takes me until January to hit my stride. And I‘ve been teaching almost 30 years and it still takes me forever to get into a routine! 2mo

Karisa @Sace 💯% I‘ve been teaching for 25 years, and it still takes over all for me too! So much time and effort, nights/weekends, to do it well. Wouldn‘t have it any other way though 🙌 2mo

Novel set AFAICT in 50s #Singapore, in a shanty town peopled with Malays & Indians. All characters have been dealt a terrible hand in life. There is an economic crisis & the country (then part of British Malaya) is picking itself up after WWII & bombings. Salina is a prostitute with a heart of gold & a kept good-for-nothing boyfriend. Heartbreaking & full of humanity
The French translation flows well but wd have benefited from a better proofreader

Dilara picture of “Colorful shophouses in Koon Seng Road, Singapore from Basile Morin, via Wikimedia Commons not particularly apt, but pretty. I gave up on finding a good-quality, public-domain picture of 50s Singapore that would fit the book's context. 2mo

I bought this second-hand book online because it is written by a renowned Malaysian author and there isn't a huge choice of works translated from Malay available, but it looks like it is all set in Singapore (possibly spanning before and after its independence from Malaysia), so I'll read it first, and then decide whether it can count for #FoodandLit #Malaysia or not. If not, it'll tick the Singapore box for my Global Challenge 😁. Win-win!
