Pickpick

Scored these at my building‘s book exchange last night after coming home from watching The Great Lillian Hall at the cinema. Beautiful movie. It was a long weekend in New South Wales so I made the most of it eg. Pots of tea in bed on Sunday and Monday morning as I had ballet on Saturday morning for 3.45 hours. I got in two hours of Pilates on Sunday with the torturer, Flavia. Trying to get to Singapore again soon. So much to do so little time.

I read Kwans Lies and Weddings last year and really enjoyed it, but this older one if his just didn't hit the same. I really dislike Nick, IDK if he is just a jerk or if he is completely stupid but I would not have lasted a quarter of the time Rachel did with him during this trip. And man everyone she meets is just the worst. Overall it is insanely tone deaf about money and colonization while lacking all the charm of other wealthy romances

ChaoticMissAdventures I did read it all the way through though so going with 3 stars. I think the movie version Nick was easier to handle because you get to look at Henry Golding the whole time. 1mo
TheLudicReader I haven‘t read the book, but I loved the movie. It was so beautiful to look at. HG. 😂 1mo

ChaoticMissAdventures @TheLudicReader I think Kwan has evolved and I will read him again but for this series I advise sticking to swoony Henry and the GORGEOUS Gemma Chan 1mo

It's AAPI month
I have gone through my TBR bookcase and picked out 4 books I want to read this month to celebrate, I don't think Prescribe Cats is technically part of this month since it is a Japanese not Japanese American but I am adding it anyways and will hopefully pick up a couple of others including my Aardvark book box with Ling Ling Huang.

This…was not for me. We read this for my IRL book group in March and then watched the movie together—this is a rare case where I liked the movie better!

The whole read kind of low-key annoyed me. Reading about the lavish casual spending of the uber-rich just didn‘t land well with me, especially right now. The characters were largely shallow and/or unlikable—I realize that it was intended as a send-up of a particular segment of society, but… ⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) …the satire felt too soft and in places, it read a little like a #notallrichpeople justification. I felt like I learned a bit about Singaporean and Chinese culture, but reading about the uber-rich segment of another culture isn‘t really my goal for cultural learning. It was a quick read, though—and I did find myself curious to find out what would happen next (just not enough to read the next book). And I enjoyed the food descriptions! 2mo

Um… you‘d think that by the time the movie tie-in edition was published, they‘d have corrected stuff like this. TBH, I‘ve already been low-key annoyed reading this—reading about the massively rich just doesn‘t land well right now—and dumb errors like this aren‘t helping. Can‘t guarantee I‘ll be in a good mood about this one at book club on Sunday. 😬 At least it‘s a quick read!

Vansa The book/series start off satirising the clueless uber-rich but then ends up saying they're the good people, it really irritated me. Reflective of the massive privilege the author comes from🤷🏾‍♀️ 3mo
JamieArc What is this even supposed to say??? 3mo
BarbaraJean @JamieArc I‘m assuming it‘s supposed to be “A melodious peal rang through the room.” I think it should be a peal of something (laughter, bells, whatever)—and personally, I think “chime” would be more appropriate for the context—but at least “peal” wouldn‘t suggest that there‘s some kind of giant ringing orange rind rolling around. 2mo
JamieArc @BarbaraJean 😂😂 Exactly was I was imagining! 2mo

1. Casey got an adorable haircut. He‘s no longer at risk of heat stroke in the middle of winter from the shear wealth of hair on his body!

2. I started SISTER SNAKE tonight and I immediately feel all OMG about it. Is this the book I‘ve been waiting for? I sure hope so.

TheBookHippie Such a cutie! Enjoy your read. 3mo

dabbe @xicanti My buff cocker Caramel felt the same way. She LOVED when the hair between her toe pads was trimmed! 🤩 3mo
xicanti @dabbe toes trims are the best! Casey‘s feet become little mops when they‘re fuzzy. It makes life awkward for him. (edited) 3mo

I liked this book. It told a different story about WWII that I didn't know about. The people in this book were great. I rated this book a 3 out of 5 stars.
