This book took me a second to get hooked but then I didn‘t want to put it down. Written from the perspective of a girl raised in a cult and although it‘s fiction it seemed very real, probably because the situation is more common in the US than we like to acknowledge.

birdie_gw I love a good cult story. Are you painting a room that color?? Love it! 3w
pdxannie @birdie_gw yes! I‘m painting the hall area outside the bathroom that color and you are the only one that likes it lol! I love it. It‘s going to be lovely and everyone will be proved wrong! 2w

⭐️⭐️ This title and cover are absolute fire, but between this, and The Project by Courtney Summers, I can unabashedly say that cult stories should be reserved for nonfiction. The fictional accounts lack authenticity. Rarely is there enough about the leader or how vulnerability is exploited. I need more emotion, not just stage direction-like storytelling. The real life versions are always more fucked up, but sadly, more entertaining.

britt_brooke @Megabooks Even though I wasn‘t a big fan, I think you might like this if you haven‘t read it yet. 3y
Megabooks Hmmmm…I‘m beginning to agree with you that cults are best left for nonfiction, but thanks for the tag! 💜 3y
britt_brooke @Megabooks Sure thing! 3y

This book comes with a lot of content warnings. Look them up before you read, as some of them are spoilers. That said, even though some of them hit my own personal issues very hard (a LOT of vomiting 😫) this is one of the most incredible books I‘ve read in a while. I was disturbed, moved, and absolutely entranced. This author needs to keep writing! #DashingDecember #library #kindle

I only tell you because I don‘t want you to put so much pressure on this one life. If this one doesn‘t work out, all I‘m saying is that maybe the next one will 🙏🏻⛪️✨

What an interesting story. A severe drought in Peaches, California, A larger than life cult leader with a divine plan. The perfect mix of poverty, desperation, and blind faith. A congregation so obedient and hopeful they baptize themselves in a bathtub filled with cola instead of water. A heartbreaking story of a young girl finding her way, but there are no easy decisions in Peaches.

...What if there was a god who wanted us to ask questions?

My #July wrap up. 12 books, and honestly liked (or more than liked) them all! Standouts were Godshot, Catch and Kill, and Party of Two

This book was on a lot of lists of best releases for 2020 and I can see why - reading it felt a bit like a punch in the gut. The story follows Lacey May - a teenager who is being raised as part of a cult community. But really it's a book about motherhood, autonomy over ones body, and what it means to be family. While I found this disturbing to read, it was well written and a powerhouse of a debut.

Here are some books I think I‘d like to read in May. There‘s a good chance I won‘t read most of these in May, since I frequently change my mind about what I want to read. For the moment, they seem like good options! Do you have any TBR books you are looking forward to getting to next month?

Starting today. Enjoying the voice so far! Only over 10% in but the cult element is definitely engaging so far.

5/5🌟14 year old Lacey May lives In Peaches California, a town where climate change has created a serious drought and the residents have put all their faith in cult leader, Paster Vern to bring the rains that will save them all. Bieker's writing is exquisite! This book swollwed me whole! A story about resilience and heart, mothers and complex female relationships. Out today!! #bookreview
