Now You See Them
Now You See Them: The Brighton Mysteries 5 | Elly Griffiths
10 posts | 10 read | 1 to read
Gripping historical mystery from the bestselling author of The Stranger Diaries. 'Griffiths writes with a smart, sharp eye and great elegance' Peter James Three girls have left. None have come back. Brighton, 1963. Edgar Stephens has been promoted to Superintendent and is married to his former sergeant, Emma Holmes. Edgar's wartime partner in arms, magician Max Mephisto, is a movie star in Hollywood, while his daughter Ruby has her own TV show. The funeral of an old friend highlights just how much the gang's lives have changed in the last nine years. Edgar is struggling with fresh responsibilities and the new swinging Brighton of rioting mods and rockers; Emma is chafing against the restrictions of life as a housewife. Bob Willis, meanwhile, is tackling his biggest case since his promotion to DI: a schoolgirl missing from high-class boarding school Roedean. It looks like she's run away; but there are disturbing similarities to the disappearances of a young local nurse and a tearaway Modette, neither of whom have been seen or heard from since... A new world is dawning in Brighton, but the city's dark side is as dangerous as ever. 'A piquant mixture of humour, period detail . . . and truly beguiling characterisation' Financial Times

A soft pick. I enjoyed catching up with old and new characters several years after the events of the last book, but I have to say the dynamic of Emma as bored housewife and Edgar as her clueless husband was a bit annoying. The overall story was interesting. There‘s one more to go in this series, and I already have it in the queue. #serieslove2024 #fabulousfebruary

This is the 5th book in the Brighton Mysteries, it's now 1963, Edgar Stephens is married and a Superintendent. I really enjoyed it, and I didn't figure out who the culprit was. I have been reading the series out of order. I still need to read books 2 and 4. The 6th book is out now too. Thankfully the library has them all.

I struggled a bit with this as it frequently referenced previous storylines which I haven‘t read. Having said that though, the story was good and the characters strong, well-defined and completely likable. I enjoyed it and Elly Griffiths is always good value.

Magpiegem I started going to a new book group a couple of months ago and it turned out the lady sitting next to me was Elly Griffiths next door neighbor (I live in Brighton) I‘m hoping we can get her along one month to talk about her books 😁 2y
Jhullie @Magpiegem that is so cool! How amazing. 2y

Finished Now You See Them for our Litsy Postal markup swap. A light cosy crime. Thank you @thegreensofa 😘 Next I have See What You Made Me Do on loan from a friend. Domestic violence is a huge problem...I think it will be an important read.
@LapReader @Sarz Hope your all ok😘😘

I miss the school holidays & working from home so bad 😭 As of yesterday I‘m back at school full time. Next week we will get a class of 10 each period who have to social distance & work online. Yr 7 on Mon through to Yr 11 on Fri. Yr 12 are in everyday. I‘ll always remember April 20 as one of the best months of my life. I finally stopped rushing. I should have enjoyed it even more than I did. Stay safe peeps. I feel almost like I‘m off to war.

Lucy_Anywhere Good luck! Schools are shut here until the summer and I'm so grateful. You've got this 🙌 4y
CarolynM Hope it goes well. 4y

Off to my ballet class but 1st 2nd breaky. There are 4 tables left in the cafe. The others have been removed due to the virus. The tea is drunk from a paper cup. I‘m only a chapter into this for #LMPBC so hard to say what I think. Lots of characters though. Perhaps I would have a better grasp of them if I read the series in order. Going to the library & op shop to stock up on more books, DVDs & CDs incase of a lockdown. Then I will self isolate.

jillannjohn I‘m so jealous of open cafes and libraries! 4y
LapReader It‘s Australia mate. We‘ll be right. NOT! @jillannjohn 4y
Sarz My library service closed on Wednesday. I legitimately cried. On the plus side, they've said we can return the books we already out whenever we like. But I had a lot of holds I was waiting for that won't be coming in now. 4y
